“Done.”

“Hold out your hands.”

“Done.”

I reached into the cabinet beside me, pulled out Zac’s surprise and placed it in his hands.

“May I open my eyes now?”

“Yes.”

As soon as he saw the bottle of Hendrick’s Neptunia gin, he smiled that big, dimpled smile of his, making his eyes squint and crinkle around the corners.

“You found some!” he cheered.

“I did. Two bottles, actually. One for you and one for me.”

He held up his and studied the label. “Of course this has a mermaid on it.”

“I know. Every time you see it, I hope you think of me.”

“I’m always thinking of you, Sinclair. Come here.” Zac set the bottle down on the kitchen counter and pulled me into his arms, hugging me tightly. “Thank you for my gift,” he whispered into my ear.

“You’re welcome. Would you like to try some of that limited-release gin?”

“I would love to, but only if you’re having some.”

“Oh, I am.”

Zac kissed me. Then I started making our drinks.

“When did you find the Neptunia?” he asked.

“Today. On my way home from work, I stopped by Specs just to see if they’d restocked it and I was so excited to see two bottles sitting on the shelf.”

“That’s all they had?”

“Yes, and I snagged them. Proudly.” I chuckled and so did Zac.

“This has me thinking about our ancestry. We really do need to compare our records soon.”

“I know. When would you like to do that?”

“Maybe this weekend if my parents don’t mind keeping Malcolm for me. I mean, I know they won’t but I just don’t want to seem like I’m taking advantage of their generosity. They already do so much to help me with Malcolm.”

“Comparing our records this weekend would be a problem.”

“Why is that?”

“I talked to my dad earlier and he wants to see me this weekend.”

“Okay. Are you going to Austin or is he coming here?”

“He asked to come here.”

“I understand. Um, it’s great that you get to see him.”

Zac had been sincere about what he’d just said to me. I could see it showing in his eyes. But there was something else showing in them: sadness. I knew he wasn’t sad about this weekend not working out to compare our ancestry records. It had to do with the fact that I still hadn’t told my dad about my relationship with Zac. I’d been thinking about doing it though and now, because of the conversation that Zac and I were in the middle of having, I’d just made up my mind to do it.
