“I appreciate you both so much.”

“How’d your hearing go?” Zac then asked me.

“Smoothly. How do you feel about Brooke assigning me to another one of your cases?”

“I feel good about it but this next time, my gloves are coming off.”

“They did last time.”

“No, they didn’t. Not all the way. I held back.”

“You held back?”

“Yes—because I told Brooke that I’d take it easy on you the first time. I let you win the case.”

“You did not,” I chuckled. “I won it because of your client’s last-minute illegal drug indiscretion that you knew nothing about because you didn’t do your homework as thoroughly as I did mine.”

“But I did know about it.”

“Your reaction to my revelation of Mr. Ferguson’s stunt made it very clear to everyone in the courtroom that you didn’t know.”

“I swear, I did. I was ready to be rid of Mr. Ferguson as a client.”

I shook my head no because I didn’t believe Zac and he just kept grinning at me.

“I’m not buying it, so you can stop messing with me now,” I said.

“I’m not messing with you.”

“Bash, is there any truth to what your best friend here just said?”

“He is telling you the truth, Stevie. He already knew what Mr. Ferguson did and Zac did take it easy on you. When you’re back in court with him, you’ll see the difference.”

I kept looking back and forth at Bash and Zac, and finally rolled my eyes at them. “I’m still not convinced about any of this. And as far as gloves coming off all the way goes? What you don’t realize, Buchanan, is that I held back in court on that day too.”

“You did, huh?”

“Yes. You got a small taste of what I’m capable of, as well.”

The corners of Zac’s mouth curled up even more. “I’m looking forward to getting a full taste of it and then a full taste of you afterward.”

And there went Zac’s professional mode flying out the door.

“I’m gonna go ahead and leave on that note. It’s been fun, guys,” I chuckled.

“See you later, doll,” Bash said, but Zac didn’t say anything else. He just kept staring at me and grinning.

After walking a few yards down the hallway, I looked over my shoulder to see Zac’s eyes still on me. Then he quickly patted his chest above his heart. Without anyone around us knowing it, he had just told me that he loved me. I smiled and nodded at him, then rounded the corner to go to the elevators.

“I have a surprise for you,” I told Zac.

“You’re my surprise. Always.”

“Well, another one then.”

“Okay,” he said, walking up to me in my kitchen.

“Close your eyes.”
