“I’d be happy to take you. I’m sure there are plenty of tattoo parlors here in Destin but Stevie… You’rereallyserious about getting one?”

“I am.”

“What made you want to?”

“You. Me. Being here. I want something symbolic of us on my skin.”

I looked at Stevie’s naked body lying next to mine. It was Sunday morning and we were still in bed inside the master bedroom of our beach house. The sun was shining and the ocean breeze was blowing in through the open patio doors.

“Do you know where you want it?”

“Here,” she said, touching just below her left collarbone.

“Okay. That shouldn’t be too painful.”

“I’m not worried about the pain.”

I searched Stevie’s sleepy blue eyes and then shook my head at her. “I can’t believe you really wanna do this.”

“Well, believe it.”

“You already know what you want, don’t you?”

“I do.”

“What?”

“Scottish thistle.”

As soon as those two words left her mouth, I knew what I was going to have to do.

“If you’re gonna get our motherland’s emblem inked onto your skin, then I’m getting it inked onto mine too.”

“No, Zac, you don’t have to do that. If Scottish thistle doesn’t mean as much to you as Malcolm’s tattoo, then please don’t get it. Don’t do it just because I am.”

“But it does mean as much now that I think about it. You said you want something symbolic of us, and there’s no better choice than Scottish thistle,” I said, sitting up in bed. I was getting more and more excited with every passing second.

“Okay, but…”

“Stevie, I wanna do this with you. It means a lot that you asked me to take you to get your first tattoo and it means a lot that we’d both have one that reminds us of us every time we look at it.”

“I don’t think you’re gonna want the one that I found online last night while you were sleeping. It’s really feminine looking.”

I reached for Stevie’s cellphone on the nightstand and handed it to her. “Show me what you found.”

She was right about the tattoo design being feminine looking. The dainty sprig of thistle had a green stem, a delicate purple flower, and appeared to be about three inches in length. It would look amazing on Stevie but not on me.

“That one is perfect for you. I’m about to start looking for a Scottish thistle tattoo that would fit me.”

“Can I help you look for it?”

“Of course you can! I want your input. We’re doing this together, babe.”

“Zac, this is gonna be so much fun.”

“I know.”

“I’m gonna go make us some coffee and you start looking for a tattoo. I’ll be right back.”
