“Come here for just a sec.”

Stevie waved me over to her and when I leaned down to see what she needed, she surprised me by grabbing me by my tie and pulling me the rest of the way to her. Then she kissed me. It was slow, soft and so warm, and when she stopped, I leaned my forehead against hers.

“I needed that,” I whispered.

“Same here. I’ll meet you at your office, Buchanan.”

My office was on the twenty-first floor of one of the high-rise buildings in downtown Dallas. Stevie met me in the underground parking garage, parking next to my Blazer, and the two of us walked to the elevator. As we were getting on, Stevie asked me about my secretary and paralegal. She wanted to know if they were still at work since it was only a little after four.

“No, I told them to go on home. They’re on salary so it’s all good,” I said.

“Okay then.”

Stevie and I were alone on this elevator ride but we held back from even holding hands. Without talking about it, she knew as well as I did what would get started if we touched each other again right now. And that didn’t need to happen until we were behind secure closed doors.

On my floor, I unlocked the office door and then locked it behind Stevie and me. She began walking around the front area, looking at everything, and I just kept looking at her.

“This is a really nice workspace for your employees. Lots of room. Where isyouroffice, though?” she asked and I nodded in its direction.

“Are you sure you wanna see it?”

Stevie’s gaze trickled down to my mouth. “I’m sure.”

“Then come with me.”

After walking into my personal workspace, I stood back again and watched Stevie check out everything inside the room. She went over to my desk first and ran her fingertips across the top, then lightly touched the paperwork that I had sitting there. My high-back executive chair came next and then my library of law books. Stevie also took the time to look at the pictures of Malcolm and me that were displayed on my walls. She didn’t say a word—but her smile did.

After that, she walked over to my round bar cart, which had a bottle of Hendricks gin sitting on top of it and also a set of Copa gin glasses, then opened my mini fridge, where I had tonic water, limes, and ice. Stevie smiled again then headed toward my couch and coffee table. While she was checking them out, my pride continued surging because of her obvious interest in where I worked and also her respect for the job I did.

The one and only time that Avery had come here, she gave my office a quick once-over, shrugged her shoulders at me, andwas then ready to leave. She didn’t care about anything other than the fruits of all my labor.

I was still standing by my door watching Stevie when she stopped and looked at me from across the room. She was in front of my picture window and the sunlight streaming in through it was illuminating everything about her but especially her deep blue eyes with those little gold flecks in them.

“Zac, I love it here,” she said, smiling once more.

“Thank you.”

“This space is so you. It even smells like you.”

“I hope that’s a good thing.”

“It is. You decorated your entire office space, didn’t you?”

“Yes.”

“Well, if you ever get tired of practicing law then you’d make one hell of an interior decorator.”

We both laughed, and then I asked Stevie if she’d like to have a Hendricks and tonic with extra lime.

“Only if you’re having one,” she said.

“I am. I need it.”

“Why do you need it?”

“My nerves.”

“Why are you nervous?”
