“I signed up for this, Zac. I agreed to journey down this pathway with you knowing full well that it was going to be hard. You and I have already had to deal with things that we’ve never had to deal with before and so far, we’ve done a good job of handling them. But I know there are gonna be days when we do a shit job of handling matters because we’re human. That doesn’t mean we quit, though. It means we pull ourselves up off the floor and keep fighting for what we want. Besides, I love a good fight. You should know that.”

Zac smiled. “I do know that, Joan of Arc—and I love you.”

“I love you, heart and soul. Now tell me goodbye and go home to your sweet Malcolm. I’ve got a picture of you that I wanna frame and put on my nightstand,” I said, pointing at the manila envelope sitting on my kitchen counter.

“Okay, I’ll go, but where’s your gun?”

“In my nightstand drawer.”

“I know you have a security system, but it’s just that…”

“You’re territorial and protective of me.”

“Yes.”

“I feel completely safe because of you.”

“Good. That’s what I want. I’ll call you after Malcolm goes to sleep.”

“And I’ll be waiting.”

I walked Zac out to the garage, but before I raised the door, he held me in his arms for longer than I expected. He was quiet the whole time, too, and afterward, he didn’t give me a passionate kiss goodbye. He just pressed his lips against mine while breathing me in. Yes, saying goodbye to him like this was getting old, even though he and I were so new. I was tired of having to do it, but there was still nothing in this world that could ever make me walk away from what this incredible man and I shared.

“I’M GONNA GOto the mall to see if I can find a pair of high heels I like. I already have a pair that would work but they’re not exactly what I envisioned wearing with my Moulin Rouge costume,” I told Zac.

“What color high heels?”

“I’m not telling you, because if I do you’ll know the color of my costume. Well, one of the colors.”

He sighed but I could also hear his smile over the phone. “Fine.”

“I’ve already told you that I want it to be a total surprise.”

“I know. I just keep hoping you might give me a hint. I can hardly wait to see you looking like you stepped out of the ‘Lady Marmalade’ music video. I’ll bet you went with a costume that’s similar to Christina Aguilera’s.”

“What makes you think I did?”

“Her costume is one that I can easily imagine on you and I can also imagine your makeup and hair done the same as Christina’s in the video.”

“You can keep betting and imagining all day long about that and keep wondering about it too. I’m not telling you a thing. You’re just gonna have to wait and see, Buchanan,” I chuckled.

He sighed again. “Okay, well, I’m planning to take Malcolm over to my mom and dad’s at six, and then I’ll come over to your house and get dressed.”

“I changed my mind about you getting dressed here.”

“What?”

“I want to meet you at Bash’s.”

“But why?”

“I really want it to be a total surprise when you see the costume that I got. I wanna walk into Bash’s house and see your face. It’s all about anticipation.”
