“Several times, I bet.”

“No, not several. Twice.”

“Did you know the women?”

“I knew one of them. She’s a defense attorney who’s no longer living in Dallas or practicing law here.”

“Were you two actually friends?”

“No. We knew each other distantly through the legal community.”

“Still—she had to have known you were married.”

“She did, and not just because of the wedding band that I wore at the time, but also because I told her I was married after she approached me with her romantic interest. She didn’t care, though.”

“She just wanted what she wanted and that was you.”

“Apparently so.”

“I can’t say that I blame her,” Stevie chuckled.

“I’m choosing to take that as a compliment.”

“I intend it as one. Now tell me about the other woman.”

“She was a total stranger who approached me at the mall when I was there alone. I immediately shut down her advances, too.”

“I didn’t make romantic advances toward you at first, but you did toward me.”

“Yes I did. We’ve talked about this before and again, I have no explanation as to why I was willing to throw off all my religious restraints other than it was just you, Stevie. The first time I laid my eyes on you, something about you called to me and didn’t let go. I never thought I was going to see you again but then I did and when I did, I just knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That you were the one for me. That you were my exception.”

“God, I miss you, Zac, even though it’s only been one day since we’ve seen each other.”

“I miss you more.”

“I really appreciate your understanding about Graham and me running into each other.”

“Sure, I understand. Again, you’re lucky that things can be cordial between you and him. But I do have a question.”

“What?”

“You haven’t mentioned anyone being with Graham. So he was alone?”

“He was.”

“Did he bring up your ex-best friend?”

“No, but I did. I asked Graham if he was still with Emma and he said no. They split up two months ago and he’s not dating anybody.”

“How’d parting ways with Graham go?”

“Fine. He told me to tell my dad hello and that he’d pray for him, and then we hugged each other goodbye. That was it.”

“I really hope you don’t mind me asking all of this, Stevie. I can’t help but be territorialandprotective of you.”
