“Handwritten, and it looks like a woman’s writing because of the swirls and loops. Brooke thinks the letter came from someone involved in one of the cases that I was on. I’ve apparently pissed someone off.”

“That just goes with the territory.”

“Brooke said that too, and I know it’s true. It’s just that I’ve never dealt with anything like this. I am so angry right now and wish whoever sent this letter to me was standing here in front of me. I’d…”

“And I know you would. It’s gonna be okay though, Stevie, and here’s what I’m gonna start doing.”

“Escorting me to and from the D.A.’s office and the courthouse?”

“Yes.”

“Brooke said you were gonna want to do that. I appreciate it, but Zac, you can’t escort me every day. You’ve got your own work to do. Besides, I carry pepper spray with me and I’ll be fine. I’m just gonna be more watchful for a while.”

“Babe?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m doing this. Rearranging my schedule is no problem. You are my priority.”

“But I…”

“It’s non-negotiable.”

I leaned my head back against my chair and closed my eyes. “I don’t like having to do this.”

“I know you don’t, but you’re gonna do it and keep doing it until some time has passed. This may be nothing at all but we’re not gonna take a chance. We’re gonna be proactive. It’s a crazy world out there and you know that as well as I do.”

“Listen, Brooke has already talked to me about getting some of the police officers up here to walk me to and from my car. She even thinks Bash will want in on doing this, so you won’t have to do it all.”

“Bash will definitely want in on this but for now, I’m handling it. Yes, I’m gonna tell him about what’s happened and I’m also gonna call Brooke to talk to her about it. The three of us will make all the safety arrangements for you.”

I got quiet, trying to process what was happening.

“Are you still there?” Zac asked.

“Yes,” I mumbled.

“It’s three-fifty. I’m gonna call Brooke and Bash. I want you to go walk around inside that big building that you’re in. Take a break. Go get a snack out of the vending machines. Grab a Gatorade. Just don’t keep sitting around and fretting about all of this. Okay?”

“Okay.”

“I’ll meet you at five, right there in your office.”

“Zac, I can meet you downstairs at the front door of the building.”

“Stevie?”

“What?”

“It’s non-negotiable.”

ZacandBrooke peeked their heads around my office door at 4:55 p.m. and grinned at me.

“Okay, you two,” I said, unable to keep from grinning back at them.

“You better now?” Zac asked me as they walked into my office.

“Yeah, I’m better.”
