“So what in the hell am I supposed to do, Brooke? Look over my shoulder all the time now for someone that I’ve pissed off to come up to me all because I was doing my fucking job?”

“I’m always looking over my shoulder. That’s why I carry pepper spray with me and that’s also why I have a gun locked in the console of my car. I’ve had officers walk me out to and from my car plenty of times.”

“I don’t wanna have to do that bullshit.”

“You have no choice now, Stevie, and I’m sorry.”

As we were staring at each other, Brooke’s eyes filled with sympathy for me while mine filled with even more anger. When my cellphone chimed, we both jumped. Zac was texting me. Brooke looked over at my phone and then met my gaze.

“You need to tell him what’s happened. You’ll feel better if you do and he’s probably gonna want to start escorting you to and from this building and also the courthouse.”

“He can’t do that, Brooke.”

“Sure he can. I can too. We’ll get some police officers to help as well, and I already know Bash is gonna want to jump in on this.”

“And how long is all of this bullshit gonna have to go on?”

“For a while. We’re just gonna play it safe and see how things go. If nothing else comes up—say after a month—then we can start backing off a little at a time.”

I grabbed the letter out of Brooke’s hand and held it up in front of her. “This is a woman’s writing.”

“Yes, it appears to be.”

“I don’t remember pissing off any woman in court to this degree.”

“Maybe you didn’t realize you did.”

I threw the letter down onto my desk and fumed. I wished whoever had done this was standing in front of me now because I’d shove their threat up their ass.

“Joan of Arc, you’re gonna stroke out on me if you don’t breathe and try to relax. I understand how angry you are. The first time I received a letter like that, I was enraged. I couldn’t believe someone had the gall to send it—and by the way, I never found out who it was. Nothing else ever came of it, and that’s probably gonna be what happens with this.”

I blew out a heavy breath and shook my head back and forth, still fuming.

“I’m gonna leave your office now and you’re gonna call Buchanan. You need to talk to him and I’m gonna go let the rest of the team know what the postman delivered to you today. Okay?”

“Okay.”

As soon as Brooke closed my door, I opened Zac’s text and my jaw dropped.

Zac: Hey, you. My stomach just knotted up for no reason, and then I saw you in my mind. What’s wrong?

Me: May I call you?

Zac replied by immediately calling me and I answered his call by sighing.

“Stevie, what happened?”

“Some asshole sent an anonymous letter to me here at the D.A.’s office.”

“What did it say?”

“I’m watching you.”

“Did they write anything else?”

“Nope. It was short and sweet.”

“Was the letter typed?”
