“Buchanan, I hope you’re right. I’m gonna pray for that door to open sooner than later and also pray that no one gets hurt in the process. Situations like this are always such a gamble.”

“We both know that.”

“Okay,” Brooke breathed out. “Switching gears on you again… Here’s how it’s gonna go with me being in the position that I am as the district attorney, Stevie working for me, and you two being romantically involved with each other. Should someone somehow figure out orthinkthey’ve figured out you’re involved and bring their concern to me about the obvious conflict of interest, I’m gonna play dumb. I don’t know a thing. Got it?”

“Got it,” Zac said and I nodded. “We’re gonna be more careful when in the public eye, so no one should come to you about anything that has to do with Stevie and me.”

Brooke grinned. “No more stealing kisses, huh?”

“No. Not even as tempting as I know it’s gonna be.”

“You two look really good in love. It’s a fast and furious love just like mine was with the exception. I can tell that it’s the real deal too. It isn’t infatuation. It’s not a fling.”

“It is the real deal,” Zac said. The expression on his face was as serious as Brooke’s was now. “I would lay down my life for your Joan of Arc.”

“I have no doubt that she would do the same for you.”

“HEY, I WANTEDto let you know I’m not gonna be able to meet you at the running trail after work. Malcolm has a fever and I’m actually on my way to my parents’ house now to go pick him up,” I told Stevie.

“No problem at all. Does Malcolm have any other symptoms?”

“My mom said he’s congested, like he’s getting a cold.”

“Summer colds are the worst. I wish there was something I could do to help.”

“You are helping, just by being understanding about me not being able to see you today.”

“Of course I understand, Zac.”

“Are you still gonna take a run?”

“I need to. It’s been days since I’ve exercised, thanks to you,” she chuckled.

“It’s been worth it, hasn’t it?”

“It absolutely has.”

“No regrets here. But maybe we can meet at the trail in the next couple of days. I’ll just have to see how my boy does.”

“Do you have children’s Tylenol or anything for colds for little ones?”

“Yes. I am well stocked up on all of the above.”

“Good. Hey, hang on for just a sec.”

“Okay.”

I could hear muffled voices and realized that someone had walked into Stevie’s office. As soon as she got back on the phone with me, she said it was David. He had a question about a case.

“I’m almost at my parents’ house, so I’ll let you go, but I’ll call you later this evening,” I said.

“Please do. I wanna know how Malcolm is doing.”
