Hailey smiled.

“And then the omega found that her twin sisters were prettier than she was, so she asked people to hurt them, to scar them, and make them ugly. It didn’t work, but it did mean that my sister and I don’t like people just because they say they’re an omega. All that pretty can hide an ugly heart, so now, I wait to see how people treat me. To me, that shows whether they are pretty inside or not. Using something you are born to and didn’t earn to be a bully isn’t pretty.”

Hailey’s blue eyes welled up, and she ran to put her face into Lexa’s shoulder. Lexa stopped her. “This is just like when you talked to Nora. Being an omega is just like being born with freckles. It just happens. It isn’t something to be proud of, just aware of, baby. Torin isn’t an omega, and he’s still special.”

Hailey sniffled. “Yeah. He is pretty and smart and good.”

“And he isn’t an omega.”

Olly stuck her hand out. “It has been nice meeting you, Auntie Lexa.”

Lexa sighed. “She’s a kid.”

“She’s a kid with a rough start. She clung to anything that gave her security. Here, her worth as an omega is worshipped, so that is the most important thing.” She smiled. “I have seen it before.”

Lexa nodded. “I know. I need to step in, but they override me and spoil her behind my back.”

Hailey stood up. “They do?”

“Yes, you know how when I tell you not to do something, and Illyana lets you because you are an omega? That is spoiling you. You have to stop them from giving you things you didn’t earn. You know what earning is.”

“Oh.”

Olly watched the little girl grapple with not being worshipped versus getting everything she wanted.

Hailey took a deep breath. “Are you happy with Feng, cousin Olly?”

Olly smiled. “Most of the time.”

“How did you know that he was your alpha?”

“Oh. Somewhere in this city, magic is working to change betas to be more like omegas for special alphas who have trouble finding a match. So, I got a mark on my back that let him know I was the beta for him.”

“Zumu Fen said it was a tattoo.”

Olly turned and showed her back to the little girl. “Tattoos can’t move.”

The halter dress bared her entire back, and Hailey gasped and trailed her fingers over it. The dragon was flying.

Olly said, “The dragon is Fen, and the storm clouds are Benjiro.”

“You have two mates?” That impressed Hailey.

“Well, three, but one is in training.”

Lexa snorted.

Hailey giggled. “I can feel the lightning.”

“Uh-oh.” Olly looked up, and Benjiro was on his way to her. “Hailey, that’s enough playtime.” She straightened.

Lexa stared and muttered, “I thought Grigory was big.”

Benjiro walked up to her and wrapped his arms around her. “You are frustrated.”

She nodded. “We are going to do holidays with your family or Minoru and Polly.”

Lexa got up and smiled. “Hello. You are the other mate?”
