She sat at the head of the table with James by her side. He looked up when I entered the room, but Grace kept her gaze on her laptop.

“Hey! Luke! How’s it going?” asked James.

“Good. Good. How are you?” I asked, staring at Grace the entire time.

“You know, finishing up here, then thinking of heading to watch the game at the bar. Want to come?”

“Uh, I don’t think I can make it, James. I think I have plans.”

“You think?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh, okay. Well, if anything changes, you know where to find me.”

When Grace still didn’t acknowledge me, I sat down at the desk on the other side of her. I cleared my throat, but she still didn’t look up. James stared at her, then at me, and shrugged his shoulders as though telling me he didn’t know what was wrong with her, either.

“Good morning, Grace,” I said.

“Morning,” she said, tucking one side of her hair behind her ear. I followed her finger as it ran down her neck and envisioned my tongue marking the same path.

“Did you sleep well?”

Her head snapped up and she stared at me with wide eyes. “How did you? I mean. Yes. Fine, thank you.”

Her reaction made me wonder if she had tossed and turned as much as I had last night. “Can I get you anything?”

“Um, Daniel gave us the last of the files. So, we’re good and should be done by the end of the day.” She seemed nervous and I couldn’t figure out why.

“Can I get you a coffee? With some vanilla flavor, perhaps?”

That caught her attention again. “How did you know?”

I leaned in closer and whispered, “I smelled it on your lips last night.”

She gasped and turned to look at James. His head shot up. “What? What’s wrong?”

I smiled.

Grace didn’t.

“Sorry, I just had a thought. James, why don’t you ask Daniel for the bank balances? I think I want to go over those again.”

“But we already checked it.”

“That’s why I said I want to check them—again,” said Grace, raising her eyebrow at James. I loosened my tie. Something about her taking control made her even hotter.

“Fine,” James muttered and stood from the table.

As soon as he left, Grace turned to me. “You can’t whisper stuff like that in my ear,” she hissed.

“Why not?”

“Because James could have heard you.”

“And?”

She exhaled. “And I take my job very seriously. I don’t want him to think I mess around with people at work.”
