“What if we bite each other, and neither of us dies?” he asked loud enough for her to pick up.
She opened the door a handspan and glared at him. “Your mind is a disturbing place, Tallak,” she said before she shut the door again.
He grinned as he sauntered over to the bed, plopped down on the mattress, and settled in to wait.
CHAPTER 21
When Hazel emerged from the bathroom, hair falling around her shoulders in shiny, silky, soft-looking waves, her eyes accentuated with smoky, dark makeup, and a deep-red color on her lips that made Tallak want to bite that mouth of hers, he had to remind himself that this was about her, not him. That she’d chosen the dress she wore because it apparently made her feel good, and not because she wanted to torture the fuck out of him.
Probably.
He stared at her for a good long moment, fighting the urge to peel her out of the skintight black dress made from some material that glittered in the light with each of her sinuous movements. The skirt ended quite a bit above her knees, baring most of her legs, and he absolutely shamelessly tilted his head to look those legs up and down, reminiscing in the memory of what it felt like to have them wrapped around his hips as he drove into her.
High heels in shiny black completed the look, and he made a mental note of making sure she’d keep them on later when they were back home and he’d strip her bare and show her just how much he hungered for her.
“Tallak,” she said in a tone that indicated she was repeating herself.
Bringing his blood-emptied brain back on track, he wrenched his gaze from her luscious legs up to her face. “What?”
“You didn’t say where we’re going. Am I overdressed?”
More like underdressed. Again he struggled with his mating urge–induced impulse to either get her naked and happily moaning underneath him or cover her up in a nun’s habit before going out with her, lest another male get any ill-advised ideas about trying his luck with a breathtaking beauty like her.
Come on. You’ve got more fucking control than that. Get a grip.
He cleared his throat. “No, no, you’re fine.”
She chewed on her lower lip. “Just fine?”
“Babe,” he said with as much patience as he could muster, given the raging hard-on he sported, “there’s two ways this can go. Either I tell you exactly how hot you are, which will snap my control and we’ll end up fucking in here all night, or we agree that you look fine and we’ll actually make it out of here before I jump you like a starved incubus.”
Hazel pressed her lips together, her eyes sparking with silent laughter. “Fine it is.”
“Great, let’s go,” he said and turned on his heel to march out of the room, needing to walk ahead of her. He didn’t trust himself with the view of her ass in motion right in front of his nose, not in that dress.
He still managed to hold the door for her when they exited the foyer, though he did cover his eyes as he waved her through. Her soft chuckle wrapped around him like a sensual caress.
“Tallak,” she said in the next moment, a note of wariness in her voice. “What’s that?”
He followed her gaze to the sleek black beauty sitting in the driveway. “My car. Why?”
She turned to him with wide eyes. “A Tesla? How—how can you afford that?”
“I can’t.” He studied his fingernails. “The demon I offed the other day could.”
“Tallak!”
“What?” He raised his arms to the side. “It’s not like he needs it anymore.”
When she still stared at him in dismay, he added, “He was a lilu who enjoyed visiting pregnant women while they slept and causing them nightmares that would make them miscarry. There, you happy now?”
Hazel blinked and raised a brow. “You researched all that?”
He shrugged and opened the passenger-side door for her. “Just being a good little demon hunter in service of the local community.”
For a moment, she studied him with an unreadable expression, then, to his utter shock, she rose up on her toes and gave him a kiss on the cheek, her hand caressing his jaw. “You really are a good person under all that grumpy, snarly exterior, you know that?”
He couldn’t breathe.
