Whatever.

It’s boneless.

And now I think I maybe want to cry, because the Bones or No Bones Day dogdied.

However, I don’t cry. I don’t even open my eyes when suddenly I’m swooped up in a cradle hold. My relaxed body simply leans more fully into the hold, my head on Jake’s shoulder. I nuzzle in closer, and my nose gets a whiff of him.

He smells like a man.

Like the sweatshirt I wear, but more powerful.

More potent.

He smells really, really good.

“Yous’ellgood.”

Jake chuckles as he carries me the few feet to the door.

“I need you to wake up enough to punch the code in, Soph.”

“Hmmm...”

“You have to unlock the door.”

Instead of opening my eyes, I mumble the six-digit code that will unlock the townhouse. I should worry about giving a man who’s essentially a stranger the code that grants him access to my home but again...

Too tired to care.

Maybe in the morning Em and I can figure out how to change it.

If I remember.

The next thing I know, I’m in my bedroom and he’s lowering me to my bed. I wonder how he knew to take me upstairs? Maybe he accidentally walked into Emina’s room. Or maybe I told him and I just don’t remember.

“Thank you,” I manage to say when my back hits the bed. I feel my shoes being removed and then my covers being tugged as I roll to my side, and soon I’m cocooned in the heat of blankets.

And just like that...

It’s lights out.

* * *

The first thingI realize in the morning is that I hurt.

Badly.

My head feels like it’s going to pound right off.

The next thing I realize is that I’m still dressed, while wearing a sweatshirt that smells like a man.

I squint my eyes as I open them, thankful to see that I’m in my bed—and in my bed alone. I think back to last night, and it’s all a bit fuzzy after Jake the Bartender introduced me to the owner’s beer.

Like an old movie, snapshots of the following hour or so flash across my mind, with a broken record effect on the bridge. Either I stumbled six times, or my brain really wanted me to remember what a fool I made of myself.

“Ugh,” I groan, dropping my arm over my eyes. I don’t remember everything I said nor everything I did, but I do know that I was very likelynoton my best behavior.

All because of fucking Josh and Megan and Shaina.
