“If you take her,” I say slowly, evenly, “I will find you, and I will skin you alive.”

He snorts. “Yeah, right.”

“I’ve done it before, buddy. I’ll gladly do it again.”

That’s when I see him—David, standing next to the car in front of me, illuminated by my headlights. He’s smiling, watching as Rosie is shoved into the car behind me.

I’m going to kill him. If Rosie doesn’t understand, then so be it. This is too goddamn far.

“I suggest you remove your gun from my head.”

“I don’t think so.”

“Fine then,” I grouse.

It doesn’t take much to disarm him. Really, considering he’s “practically David’s right-hand man,” you’d think he’d have better training. But no, I knock it from his hand with ease. He snatches at my hair, but I grab his fingers, pushing them backward until he’s screaming in pain.

Grabbing my gun, I shove open my door and roll out, staying low. I shoot him in the foot, and he screams again.

“Stop,” David shouts, “or I’ll shoot her.”

I freeze. From this low and since I’m sandwiched in between the driver’s side door and the open back door, I can’t see the car behind us that well. Is David bluffing? Or did they pull her back out again?

“Jade, set your gun down.”

Cursing, I do. I can’t take the chance.

“Kick it this way. Good. Now get out from behind the door.” He bends down, picking up my gun and giving me an evil smile.

He won’t kill me. If that was his plan, he would’ve done it already.

I step out, hands away from my body. When I look, Rosie isn’t out in the open, but David’s gun is pointed at the car.

“It’s up to you, Jade. Make one move, and I’ll shoot. Maybe I’ll hit her, maybe I won’t.”

I don’t move.

The car starts turning around.

No.

I watch as it drives away, heading the way we came. “Where are you taking her?”

“I told you this would happen if you ever stepped out of line.”

“David, if you hurt her—”

“Just do what you’re told,” he snaps. “Did you think you could run? Seriously, Jade? You’re not as smart as you think you are. Now you’ll do your job, and you’ll do it within the timeframe I set, or I’ll kill her.”

“She’s your daughter,” I yell, tears blurring my vision of the car speeding down the road.

“How have you not gotten it through your head yet?” David laughs, and it’s a pitying, bitter sound. “I don’t care.”

“Please don’t hurt her.”

“Then do your damn job. And don’t even think of trying to follow her. You won’t like what happens next. Landon, get in my car.”

“Boss, my... my foot,” Landon says from the ground. “I can’t walk.”
