Felix works his jaw. “Fuck. I guess maybe he’s left the business behind.”

“By business, I assume you mean a wide variety of criminal activities?”

With a sly smile, he says, “I won’t deny it.”

Good to know.

“I suggest we leave Brooke alone for now. Maybe we can do some poking around and see what David is up to. But if there’s a chance he’s not a threat to Brooke, I don’t want to intervene.”

Felix nods. “I guess it’s possible, since I’m considering...” He trails off, shaking his head. “Never mind.”

I’m curious about what he was going to say, but I know better than to pry into Felix’s life when I’m not welcome. So I keep my mouth shut as we pick up our pace and catch up with the others.

Throughout dinner, I keep my worry to myself. There’s no need to upset anyone with speculation. Especially since I don’t know if there’s any substance behind Felix’s accusations.

One thing is for sure, though: I’m not letting this go. Protecting my family has always been my first priority. If David is about to make trouble for Brooke, he’d better be prepared to have it dealt back to him tenfold.

. . .

I spend the evening scouring the internet for information about David. Felix is the computer genius, so maybe I should ask him to do it. But if I don’t do something myself, I won’t be able to shake off the restlessness that’s come over me since I laid eyes on David.

Unfortunately, I don’t come up with any dirt. David seems like a normal dude. He doesn’t even have a fucking parking ticket.

“Already did all that shit.” Alex flops onto my bed before taking a bite out of an apple.

I don’t bother telling him that he should knock the next time he wants to barge into my room. He won’t listen. Instead, I turn around in my chair, leaving my laptop open on the desk.

“You didn’t find anything?” I ask.

“Nothing. Graduated from Harvard, been working at some investment firm, and he just bought a bar in Philly.”

That’s about everything I’ve found, too, minus some private social media profiles.

“Sounds pretty clean to me.”

“Too clean,” Alex says, staring at his apple. “Don’t trust him.”

Nodding in agreement, I say, “Did Felix talk to you?”

His gaze snaps up to meet mine. “About what? Do you know something about David? Because you’re my best friend, Dominic. But if I find out you’re keeping something from me that could cause my little sister harm, I will kill you. Slowly and painfully.”

I don’t doubt it.

“Felix is just... worried.” I catch him up on what I know, watching as his expression darkens.

“I don’t want Brooke anywhere near a crime family. Fuck. We can’t tell Blaze.”

“I know.”

To be honest, I’m not sure I should’ve told Alex anything. Blaze can act rash whenever Brooke is concerned, but so can Alex. And at this point, if we’re going to prioritize Brooke’s safetyandher happiness, we need to keep this situation under control.

A plan forms in my head. “Let’s keep looking into him. We’ll see if Felix can find anything we can’t. And only when we’ve found proof that he could hurt Brooke do we do anything.”

Alex works his jaw. He doesn’t look too happy about what I’m suggesting, but after thinking it over for a few seconds, he nods. “Fine. But if he puts her in any danger, I’m fucking killing him.”

. . .

It takes six months for David to slip up.
