“David is paranoid. He’ll notice Felix following him.”

Dom shakes his head. “We have two cars tailing him. Tag teaming.”

Silently, I take him in, looking for any hint of emotion. Is he telling the truth? Or is he just trying to stay alive?

He’s never lied to you.

“Dom,” I say, and I hate the way my voice shakes. “Are yousurehe won’t get away?”

“We’ve been trying to take him down for over a year. This ends tonight, Jade. No matter what it takes.”

“No.” I shake my head. “No, notno matter what it takes. If we do this, Dom... I need you to promise me something.”

“Anything.”

“If it comes down to it, I need you to choose Rosie over me. Over yourself. Her safety comes first. It has to. Please.”

It’s a lot to ask. Maybe too much. But I can’t do this unless I know Rosie will come out unharmed.

Dominic’s left eye twitches, but he nods. “Rosie first. Always.”

Some of the tension in my body leaves, and it finally feels like I can breathe. “Thank you.”

“Now put the gun down, Jade.”

I do, setting it on the desk.

He stands. “Come here.”

“We don’t have time.”

In one fluid motion, he steps around the desk and yanks me into his arms. One of his hands presses me against his body, and the other cradles the back of my head. My hands come to his chest on their own accord.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper.

“A lot of things are starting to make sense now,” he murmurs. Then he cups my chin, pulling away slightly so he can look into my eyes. “Alotof things.”

This time, I can’t help the tears that fill my eyes. I blink them back, but more replace them. Dom wipes them away tenderly as they fall.

“I know I have a lot to explain,” I say, trying to focus on his steady heartbeat under my fingertips.

“Later,” he whispers, pressing a lingering kiss to my forehead. “For now, let’s get going. Felix is texting me updates on the location of the car. I’ll drive.”

As I let him pull me toward the front door, I say, “Car seat. We need to get it from my backseat.”

“I have one in mine.”

I stop. “What?”

He turns, an uneasy bashfulness on his features. I’ve only seen him with that look once or twice. “I got it after I watched Rosie that one night. In case... in case you ever needed help getting her somewhere.”

Despite all the tension riddling my muscles, my heart melts. If we weren’t in such a rush, and if I knew he absolutely wanted it, I’d kiss him right now.

Dominic tugs me to his car. Once we’re in, he wastes no time getting on the move. “Keep an eye on this,” he says, tossing his phone into my lap. “Let me know when Felix texts with updates. And Jade?”

“Yeah?”

He places one hand on my thigh, squeezing. “We’re going to get her back. I promise.”
