“I never told you my last name was Brown.”

“Yeah, but Rosie—”

“Has her mother’s last name. Mine is the same as David’s.”

“Christ,” he mutters. “I can’t believe I never put the pieces together.”

“It doesn’t change a thing.”

“It does.”

I shake my head.

“Jade,” he says gently. Too gently for a man in his position. “Put the gun down.”

“I can’t.”

“Let me help you.”

“You can’t,” I yell. “If I make one wrong move, Rosie dies. I don’t know how you know David. I don’t know why he wants you dead. But let me tell you something, Dominic. He’s ruthless. Cruel. He doesn’t care about anyone else but himself. I was so close to getting out from under him. From getting Rosie away from him. And I love you, Dom. I do. But when it comes down to it, down to her life or yours, I choose her. I always will.”

Not that there will be an always.

“I agree.” Dominic says it so casually I almost scream.

Cry,I want to shout at him.Beg. Anything but this.

“Are you—are you giving me permission to kill you?”

He smiles at me like I’m a lost puppy dog he found on the side of the road. Like he’s going to take me home, care for me, and protect me.

And even though I’m pointing a gun at his head, that feeling of safety creeps into my heart.

It’s never felt so horrid.

“No. Because this isn’t one of those situations.”

“It most definitely is.”

He shakes his head. “We’re closing in on David. He’ll be dead tonight.”

“Tonight.”

Tonight?

“I’m pretty sure I know where he’s keeping Rosie, too.”

“What?” I screech. “Why the hell didn’t you lead with that?!”

For a moment, I almost shoot him out of pure annoyance.

“We tried to trap him earlier today,” Dominic says. “We failed, but we put a tracker on the car of one of his men. Felix just called, it’s on the move.”

I shake my head. “That doesn’t mean anything. You don’t know if it’ll lead you to David.”

“I do,” he says. “Felix caught up to the car right before you got here. He said there was a second car as well, and he saw David driving.”

Oh my god.
