I should’ve known it was her. Neither Geneva nor Anette could ever be so eerily silent.

The smile she gives me is tentative at first, but it grows more sincere as she walks over. “Wedding planning has been keeping you busy, huh?”

I take a deep breath. “I still can’t believe this is happening. Have you seen my sister, by any chance?”

“She’s already in the car.”

“For the cake tasting I forgot was happening today,” I say bitterly.

“I know it’s a lot.”

She looks like her old self again. She’s wearing black pants, a gorgeous cashmere blouse, and four-inch heels. Her makeup is impeccable and her composure is bulletproof.

“Yeah,” I grumble. Then I pull myself together. “But I’m not gonna complain about it. How are you?”

“Fine,” she says breezily, as though she doesn’t know why I’d even bother asking. “You should get going. I think they’re waiting for you.”

“They?”

She gives me a wink. “We’ll catch up later,” she says, in an offhand way that makes me realize she has no intention of talking about what happened in the medical wing the other day.

I understand where she’s coming from. I’ve been guilty of the same thing, as Geneva pointed out to me not so long ago. I give Milana a wave goodbye and head outside.

But instead of the single car I’m expecting, there are two. One is a conservative sedan, as inconspicuous as possible. The second, parked right in front, is a massive black Mercedes. Not inconspicuous in the least.

The door to the Mercedes opens from the inside, and a tide of vanilla rushes over me.

“Kolya.”

“Come on,” he says from within the darkness of the car. “We don’t have all day.”

I cross my hands over my chest and stay put. “You’re coming with me for the cake tasting?”

“So it would seem.”

I roll my eyes. “Of course you’d choose to come for the errand that involves dessert. Where were you when I was picking out place settings?”

He chuckles. “Your sister’s going to get impatient if we don’t get going soon.”

I lean in and take a quick look around the Mercedes’s spacious insides. “Where is my sister?”

“In the car behind us.”

I frown. “Why?”

“Because I didn’t feel like driving with her.”

“Kolya!”

His smirk just gets deeper. “I’m letting her come. But my magnanimity only extends so far.”

I should be pissed at him. I should make this harder for him. I should slam the door in his face and walk over to the sedan so I can ride to the bakery with my sister.

Instead, I find myself getting into the Mercedes.

“Lemon soda?” he asks, offering me a cold bottle from the mini fridge underneath his seat as the driver pulls away from the curb.

“No,” I tell him sharply, even though I really could use a lemon soda right about now. “Where the hell have you been?”
