It’s the strength that pulled me through every moment of my ordeal in hell—and to so many extents, the resilience that’s kept me sane since the wild ride of last night’s events.

Now, all I want to do is lose my mind in a different way.

But first, to make Maximus lose his.

The intent consumes my mind as I fill my mouth with more of his skin, acknowledging my addiction to his heady taste before my lips clear his collarbone. But no way am I stopping there. Not even close. I want more.

And I start taking it.

Traveling my mouth into the shallow plane over his heart. Pausing there to give silent thanks for the life and strength it gives to him, before continuing my journey even farther down…

Down…

“Kara.” His rasp, beginning from the depths that I kiss over now, sizzles through the air. Crackles through my senses. And then descends across my skin and down to the space between my legs.

It’s my perfect guide, leading me to the corresponding part of him. Closer and closer…already feeling the hot throb of him against my neck…and then my lips…

And then…

“Kara.” He tangles his fingers in my hair. Unlike his earlier brush through those strands, his digits are taut and trembling. I love it. I lovehim. In so many ways, I think I always have. I know I always will.

He swells against my tongue. I increase my pressure, attentively tracing his veins. He groans, bucking his hips. He doesn’t hitch hard or far, but it’s enough to keep me going. Rejoicing in my power over this sinewed male. Savoring the gift I’m able to give him after everything he’s done for me.

Reveling in what it’s all doing to my body in return.

My skin, so hot. My nerves, so alive. My lust, so ignited.

It builds and builds until I have to express it somehow. I work faster, pumping him harder, until—oh, thank God—Maximus clamps his free hand over one of my shoulders and yanks with unmistakable force.

“Come here. I need to feel the rest of you.”

That’s all the time he spends explaining himself. But I don’t even need that. I crave our union just as strongly. It’s like a living thing inside me, a creature possessed by passions I never knew existed, taking over and pushing my body atop of his. And then around his.

And then…we’re straight to heaven.

Sighing and kissing until we’re sharing air.

Rocking and thrusting until we’re sharing shudders.

Climbing and reaching…until we’re sharing explosions.

My scream fills his mouth as his heat floods my body. And then we’re beyond heaven.

We’re in the place, so perfect and precious, that no one can reach us or harm us. A world of our hearts, of our spirits. It’s indelible and eternal…and untouchable.

And because of that, I can now embrace one truth as utterly sacred.

No matter what’s going to happen now—or whatever is coming at us because of it—we’re ready.

As long as Maximus and I are together…we’ll always be ready.

CHAPTER FOUR

MAXIMUS

The wind cuts its way through the canyon with little mercy, cold one minute and hot the next, turning my truck’s cab into the world’s first refrigerator-sauna combo. But I brave the strange switch-ups because this is the only spot in Iremia that’ll provide a clear cell signal.

I dial back the missed call from early this morning, when Kara had me distracted in all the best ways. Then, after that, when we gifted ourselves with an hour that was blessedly clear of the dreadedh’s—Hades, hell, and high emergency.
