“To the store, of course. We need to be certain.”

I nod, my heart pounding harder than ever.

How did I get myself into this? Why didn’t I think about protecting myself better? For crying out loud, I'm not a teenager. How did I allow this to happen?

I wait on my bathroom floor for Meghan. She comes back thirty minutes later with the tests. She drops the tests by my side and goes down on one knee so that we are in direct eye contact.

“I know that I have proven time and time again to be too jaded to mingle with humans. But I want to assure you that if you decide to keep this baby, I will care for him or her as if he or she is mine. And even if Sebastian decides not to give child support, I will gladly help pay for it. If you keep this angel, we will make it work.”

I shake my head at Meghan, hoping she won’t judge me.

“I'm not sure I want to keep it. I have yet to make a decision.”

“Whatever decision you make, I fully support you,” Meghan promises.

I throw my hands around her and hug her tight.

“You're the best friend anyone could ask for.”

“That's a first.” Meghan jokes.

I chuckle lightly at her words.

Meghan steps out, and I pick up a test. My hands are shaking with how hard my pulse hammers. I follow the directions on the paper and wait anxiously as the stick begins to change. I can tell Meghan is pacing right outside the door.

“Are you done?”

“You might want to come in for this,” I tell Meghan, who quickly pushes the door open and stands beside me.

“What does it say?”

“It's still determining my fate,” I whisper. Together we watch as the blood rushes through my face, and two lines eventually appear.

I shut my eyes, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

I hear Meghan's voice saying, “Congratulations.”

I chuckle a little bitterly because I know that now, whether I like it or not, I have to call Sebastian.

Meghan leaves for work a few minutes later, and I am left alone with my thoughts. Even though I know I should call Sebastian, I don't call him. I still haven't forgiven him. I don't know if I ever will. He has ruined my career because he is an arrogant prick who thinks he’s entitled to getting whatever he wants. How stupid of me to have crawled back to him as he expected me to. It was all his doing. He was smart, calculating, and devious. A real mastermind.

Even though I'm still mad at him, I give him kudos for how well he played the game. He took something so precious from me and gave me a replacement with his other hand. He had me fall in love with him. He even flaunted me around at an event acting as if he had truly begun to care for me.

My landline rings, startling me. I move toward it and pick it up. The voice that greets me causes my heart to nearly stop from guilt.

“Miss Donovan?”

It's Callie's voice, soft and inquisitive.

“Oh, Callie.” I breathe. “How are you?”

“I am alright. How are you, Miss Donovan? I woke up, and you were gone.”

I nod, even though the little girl cannot see me.

“I'm sorry, Callie. I had a lot of things to come back to.”

“You didn't say goodbye.” She whispers; her voice tinged with hurt.
