ChapterTwenty-One

Paislee

The next morning, Callie and I get up early to make pancakes before our lessons start. We do that every so often. Partially because Rose isn't that young anymore and saddling her with so many responsibilities isn't fair.

“I like pancakes,” Callie says as I continue to flip the one on the stove.

Callie looks well and hearty this morning. Yet Sebastian still insisted on calling the family doctor. The doctor should arrive by midmorning.

“I love pancakes too.”

We are both in our nightwear. I had managed to comb my bed hair and look a little presentable.

“If I could choose, I'd eat pancakes every day for the rest of my life.”

“I said that when I was young also.” I chuckle. “But with gummy bears. Now, I can't even stand the sight of the candy.”

“I don't think pancakes could ever disgust me.”

“Let's hope so.” I chuckle as I transport the pancake to a plate and push it toward a smiling Callie. “Here you go,” I tell her. “What would you like to drink?”

“Orange juice,” Callie says.

I nod and dig around the fridge for it. When I straighten up and turn towards Callie, I find Sebastian at the door studying me. I can't read his expression, but he looks a little sad…?

“Good morning, Sebastian.”

“Hello, Paislee.”

He moves further into the room to Callie and drops fond kisses on her cheeks and forehead.

“How do you feel, princess?”

“Like I can finish a mountain-sized pancake.”

Sebastian chuckles lowly. The sound causes my heart to sing.

God, I love this man. And whether or not he returns my feelings, I always will.

When our eyes meet, I give him a tentative smile. Which he returns.

“That's the spirit,” he says, fondly patting Callie's hair. “I'm heading to work.”

“I know. You're all dressed up as usual,” Callie says in her usual honest way.

Sebastian chuckles.

“Alright, smarty pants. I best be on my way to beat traffic.”

I fight the urge to run to him and demand a kiss. If things had not become strained last night, if I had not opened my big mouth yesterday, I would have been able to do just that. Sebastian does turn at the door to glance at me once more, and the longing in his eyes nearly undoes me. But he doesn't call me aside like I am hoping. He doesn't ask to talk.

Callie and I have our breakfast and get ourselves ready for the day. We continue on with our lessons, and, as usual, catch breaks in between. I find myself a little distracted during lessons. If Callie notices, she does not mention it.

I become a little restless and feel the need to be a little closer to Sebastian. I go into the master bedroom and sit on the comfortable bed he made love to me in.

I allow myself to think about all that has happened in the last twenty-four hours. I think about all the wonderful things that Sebastian has done. From inviting me to be his plus one when that’s something he hasn't done in years, asking me to come live with him and Callie, opening his home to me, and being completely vulnerable last night.
