ChapterNineteen

Paislee

Right after Abigail leaves, I go to Callie's room and knock lightly on her door. I don’t hear any movement from within, and I worriedly push the door open. Luckily, I find her fast asleep in the bed. I momentarily wonder if it's a good idea to wake her up for dinner. I decide against it.

Sebastian called to let me know he's picking me up at 7 p.m. and it is nearly time.

I move toward Callie’s door again and carefully push it open. Callie coughs lightly, and I turn to find her gaze on me. I give her a wide smile and she smiles wanly in return. I move toward her and sit by the side of her bed, my fingers brushing against her sweat-dampened hair.

“What are you doing here?”

“Checking on you, silly.” I chuckle. “How are you feeling?”

“I feel like I need to sleep more.” She yawns and rolls over. “You look dressed up, Paislee. Are you going somewhere?”

I blink at her, wondering if it is a good idea to tell her about me and her father. So far, he and I have kept things under wraps. Whatever Sebastian and I have going on between us isn't considered serious enough to let Callie in on it.

“Your father wants me to accompany him to a work thing,” I explain vaguely.

“A work thing? It looks like you both want to go on a date.”

I chuckle.

“That's not what he told me this afternoon. It's a work thing.” I tell her, which is only half the truth. She does not need to know that I intend to have her father take this gown off me when we return.

“Okay,” she says as she rolls on her stomach.

“I should leave you to get more sleep.”

“I’m not sleepy anymore. But I'd like to have some food.”

“Alright,” I say, getting up and heading toward the door. “I will rustle up something for you, or have Rose bring it up.”

“Thank you, Paislee.”

I give her a wide smile and move downstairs again.

Sebastian and I are currently heading toward the party. I smile to myself when I remember his expression at the sight of me. He had stared like I was water in the desert. Callie coming downstairs was the only reason he didn’t rip the dress right off me.

I shiver at the memory of how he had pressed me against the car and kissed me until I was too breathless to moan.

“You look so beautiful. I want to ravish you here and now.” He had whispered against my lips, hands wrapped possessively around my waist.

I had wanted him to. I wanted Sebastian to do all that he had promised and even more. Of course, he had promised with both his hands and eyes. I knew this evening was going to be magical.

We arrive at the party and it's already in full swing. There are waiters with trays of champagne milling about. The men are dressed in expensive suits and have women hanging off their arms. They look toward me and Sebastian. I try not to feel self-conscious when I find the eyes of a few of the women looking at me.

“Everyone's staring at us,” I whisper to Sebastian. He starts moving directly toward a man in a white suit.

“That's because they want to be us.” He says as he turns toward me. His eyes show playful desire still apparent in their depths. His eyes quickly run over my body. He looks quickly away again as if he can't bear the sight of me in this dress.

“This dress should never be worn out again. It should be for me and me alone.” He whispers without staring at me.

My hands are crooked around his. We are closer than ever to a man in a white suit who turns and flashes us a wide smile.

“If it isn't my friend and foe,” The man says as soon as we are close enough for communication.
