ChapterThirteen

Paislee

Dinner with Sebastian proves to be yet another enjoyable affair. He appears more relaxed than I've ever seen him and even teases me during the conversation a few times.

After we all finish eating, we move to the living room, where Callie once again begs to watch her favorite cartoon. It brings a sense of Déjà Vu that has me glancing at Sebastian. He's, however, invested in what Callie is excitedly telling him. I try to pay attention to the animation instead of Sebastian's enticing cologne which I can smell from where he's sitting on the sofa. I am a little surprised that he hasn't asked to take the conversation somewhere else. Somewhere more... private.

Soon, I find myself immersed in the animated movie about a little boy whose true nature only manifests when he's submerged in water. It is pretty suspenseful, and I become just as invested as Callie is. Two hours later, the credits start rolling and I turn to find Sebastian watching me out of the corner of his eye. He doesn't say anything but turns to Callie.

"You know the drill, kiddo," he says, giving her a knowing look.

Even though Callie pouts adorably, she gets up and runs up the stairs to get herself ready for bed. I watch her, shocked at the direction she takes. I thought the little girl's room was upstairs.

Did she, perhaps, hear what her father and I were doing the other night? Could she have told Mr. Beatles about us?

"What are you thinking about?" Sebastian questions.

I turn to him and try to laugh my fears off.

"Nothing. I simply thought that Callie's room was on the second floor."

"My staff only." He replies curtly.

I nod and look around, wondering what's next.

Is he going to carry out a formal interview? I swear if he attempts to give me some sort of exam to write—

"We should go to my office." He suggests.

My pulse leaps as if I've been asked to step out of my clothing. I shake my head softly. I know how easy it is going to be for me to completely lose my train of thought in an enclosed office space with Sebastian.

I shake my head again. I want to do this right despite how hard my pulse is pounding.

Working for Sebastian is going to be my source of livelihood. I am not going to let anything get in the way of that.

"I'd rather we talk here," I tell him, refusing to meet his gaze.

"Fair enough." Sebastian relents immediately.

I gulp down a sigh of disappointment and try to pretend that his immediate acceptance doesn't bother me. I turn to him, a little afraid of what I am going to read in his features. Sebastian doesn't look disappointed or angry at my refusal to follow him to his office.

"Did you perhaps come with your resume?"

I nod and fish around in my bag to produce it. I learned through a quick Google search that Sebastian likes to be thorough. I had a feeling that he wasn't going to just hand me the job on a silver platter.

"So," he says as he quietly peruses my file. "You majored in art?"

"I did. But I did handle several other subjects at Callie's level."

Sebastian nods.

"Callie loves art. I think it's good that it's the subject you majored in. I'm certain her curriculum will not be hard to follow."

"Not at all," I answer, feeling like I've scored a few brownie points.

Sebastian slaps my file closed and turns to me.

“I don't think I'll have anything to worry about. You have taught Callie before. She adores you. I think you both will get along just fine."
