“Great. And you wouldn't love me less.” Meghan tells me as we begin to say our goodbyes. Right before we hang up, she adds, “Don't lose your courage, Paislee. Try not to talk yourself out of that phone call, ok?”

I shake my head at my friend's outlook.

“I hate you.”

Meghan's only response is a self-indulgent chuckle.

“I'm your soul mate. Suck it up.”

Hours after my call with Meghan ended, I find myself struggling to talk myself out of it. It is one thing to turn down a job offer; it is another thing to run back with my tail between my legs. I feel a little ashamed as I force myself to pick up my cell phone and dial the number I have unintentionally memorized. It rings for what seems like forever until someone picks up. It is Sebastian.

“Sebastian Vaughn.” He announces and I swallow at the sound of that deep baritone.

“Hi, Sebastian. It's Paislee.”

There is a pause on the other end, and I struggle not to cringe or throw my phone across the room. Is he about to tell me off? Go off on me and hang up?

With bated breath, I wait.

“Oh, Paislee. How have you been?” He asks conversationally as if we are longtime friends.

“I’ve been, um, okay, I guess,” I respond, trying to match the normalcy in his tone and appear relaxed. I know I will make things more awkward if I attempt to make small talk. I decide to just rip the band aid off.

“I was relieved of my job and am wondering if you still need a nanny for Callie.”

“Ah...” He says in a raspy tone that washes over me.

I close my eyes and sink into my cushion. As much as I hate to admit it, Sebastian has the kind of voice that is great for phone sex. The first and last time I'd tried phone sex was with my high school boyfriend. He had such a girlish voice and each time he would try to deepen it, he'd end up coughing up a storm. It was so awful that I was thankful when my phone signal went out and forced a disconnection. But Sebastian's voice is low and throaty and reminds me of dark delicious chocolate. Sebastian is effortlessly sensual and exudes a sex appeal that even I am not immune to.

“It's a good thing that Callie has been without a nanny and tutor for days.”

“Oh,” I say, my heart blooming with hope. “She has?”

“As much as I hate to admit it, yes. She seems to not get along with any of the tutors I've hired.” He confesses. I can’t tell from his low tone of voice if he is tired or sad. Maybe it is a little bit of both.

“Callie and I get along really well.” I begin, knowing that this is my moment to win him over.

“That, you both do.” Sebastian agrees a little absently.

“I have a feeling that I will last longer than the other tutors if I am considered again.”

There is a pause. I can tell that Sebastian is turning my words over.

“You think so?”

“I'm fairly confident of the fact,” I say in a confident tone of voice.

“Well, you make a convincing argument.”

“Give me a chance.” I hear myself say, ready to present a PowerPoint on how I am better suited for the job if he asks.

“Alright.” He concedes, and I get up to do a little victory dance.

His next words give me a pause though.

“You know that you are in fact correct. There are many more suitable tutors lined up for interviews. I could have a hundred of them tutor Callie if I want.”

I swallow hard and nod.
