I knock on Lainey’sdoor for the fifth time tonight. Where the hell is she? Her car is in the driveway, but all the lights in her unit are off, and I don’t think she’s home. I’m trying not to panic. We don’t exactly have plans to meet up tonight, but we’ve spent every night together since the break-in at her place. Surely she knew I’d be coming around to see her, even if I’m later than I’d like to be.

“She’s not home.”

I turn around in time to see Mrs Richards poke her head out her front door and cast her evil eye over me. “A car picked Lainey up a few hours ago. Perhaps you’d be better off going somewhere else until she’s back.”

The judgement in the old woman’s eyes cuts through the darkness. She doesn’t want me hanging around, and why would she? I probably look like a thug to her. In her mind, Lainey is better off without me. And if Lainey and I were anything more than friends who had sex, I’d agree that Lainey’s slumming it with me. But Lainey and I aren’t more than friends, meaning Mrs Richards can take her judgemental attitude and shove it where the sun don’t shine.

Maintaining eye contact with the biddy still keeping her beady eyes on me, I take out my phone and call Lainey.

“Hello.”

She sounds happy, and now that I know she’s okay I’m a little pissed off I’m here waiting for her and worrying about where she is.

“Hey. I’m at your place. You’re not here and your neighbour isn’t real keen on me hanging around. Should I go home?”

I don’t want to go home. I came prepared to stay the night, and I’ve grown accustomed to sharing a bed with her, waking up holding her, and starting each day with me inside her. I don’t want to leave.

“I’m on my way home. I’ll be there in five minutes.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

With a soft humph that I can hear across her front yard, Mrs Richards gives me one final evil look and then retreats behind her front door.

Five minutes later, an Uber pulls into Lainey’s driveway. I’m leaning against the front of Lainey’s unit when she slips out of the car wearing the sexiest fucking thing I’ve seen her in.

I fight every instinct to go to her as she says goodbye to the Uber driver.

She looks pleased as she walks up to me. “Hi. I didn’t know if you were coming over.”

“I’ve come over every night, Lainey. Why would tonight be any different?”

Her smile vanishes at the harshness of my tone, and I immediately feel like a prick. I’m not trying to be a bastard, but even if we haven’t made plans, I’ve still been here every night.

“You’ve been here late each night this week. Honestly, I thought that even if you were coming I’d have enough time to go out and come back.”

“Where have you been?”

I don’t like the way my question sounds. Angry, demanding, and... jealous. But I want to know where she’s been and why she’s dressed up the way she is. She looks damn hot, and it’s taking all my control not to reach out and pull her against me so I can taste the lipstick she’s wearing.

Her brows draw together a little as she studies me. “I went out to dinner and to the movies.”

“Who with?”

She stands a little taller. “Myself.”

“What?”

She inhales and lets out a deep breath. “I went out to dinner and a movie by myself.”

“By yourself?”

“Yeah.” Her smile is small. “I wanted to go back to a Mexican restaurant I went to once with Lucas and tonight seemed like as good a time as any.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you wanted to go there? I would have taken you.”

Her lips part as she blinks up at me. “You would have?”
