“So, can you help meout? Point me in the right direction?”

“Sure, no problem, Ben. If this company is ripping clients off with shoddy alarm systems and then breaking into their homes, you’ll want to stop them. Hell, I’ll be happy to help.”

“Thanks, Glen.”

Glen White is one of the private investigators I met while working as a bodyguard. I didn’t work with him personally, but our agency used him for all kinds of background checks, as well as other information we needed stat. I’ve asked him to help me get the ball rolling on this investigation into the company that screwed over Lainey. Fortunately for me, Glen seems to be as behind this cause as I am.

“Any help you can give me in looking into them would be massively appreciated. And if I can catch them in the act...”

“I have plenty of resources. Let’s tee up a time and we can go through things.”

“Thanks again, Glen. I really appreciate it.”

“No one likes a con. Besides, it sounds important to you.”

“It is.”

I’m going to nail whoever stole from Lainey to the wall.

“Well, I’ve taken up enough of your time. I’ll be in touch.”

I stand up, and so does the fifty-year plus detective.

He shakes my hand. “Always a pleasure, Ben. How are things at Eagle Eye Security these days?”

I grimace. “Not great. There’s a new boss and he’s not my biggest fan.”

“I always thought it was a shame you left Tank. You were one of their best and they were sorry to lose you.”

“One of the biggest mistakes I ever made,” I admit.

I’d given up the job for Amber, and where had that got me? Working in a job I hate with a boss who hates me.

“I’d go back to Tank, but you probably know Hallen retired. I might still hit him up for a reference. Perhaps if you hear of anyone who needs personal security, you’ll give them my name?”

“Consider it done.” We get to the door of his small office. “Give me a call when you’ve got a few hours to spare, and we’ll see what we can dig up.”

“Great seeing you, Glen.”

“Likewise.”

As I ride towards Lainey’shouse with the security system I just shelled out a small fortune for, I’m trying to work out how I can ask to spend the night with Lainey and continue this friends-with-benefits thing we’ve got going on. I don’t know how else to label it. We’ve spent the past four nights together, and they’ve been awesome. Better than awesome. Best sex of my life. Now I’m not sure I know how to go back to being friends with her without the sex.

More problematically, I don’t want to go back to it. I don’t want to quit seeing her and sleeping with her. I’m not done enjoying the heat I feel when we’re together. After our first night together, I was sure sleeping with her again would be a mistake, but it’s one I’ve made again and again now, and I want to keep making it. Going home alone tonight is an incredibly unattractive prospect, as is going out and finding a willing woman to share my bed. I don’t want just any willing woman. I want Lainey.

Lainey must have heard my bike in her driveway because she opens the door of her unit before I can knock.

“Hey,” she says.

Instead of replying, I dip my head and kiss her. The moment our lips meet, the pleasurable and irresistible tension she seems to constantly inspire in me weaves through my body. When I feel her tremble in my arms and her knees slacken, I have to fight the urge to push her against the wall and take her with the front door still open and Mrs Richards probably taking a gander at us out her window.

“That’s a mighty fine hello,” Lainey says huskily when I finally force myself to let her go.

“What can I say? You inspire great things from me.”
