“How about a Cocksucking Cowboy?” he asks with a wink.

“Sounds perfect.”

I’ve just knocked back the Cocksucking Cowboy when a drunk, bald guy with a paunch takes the seat beside me. Super. Could tonight get any worse?

“Hey, Pretty Eyes,” he slurs. “Want to take a ride on the love machine?”

I guess it can get worse.

I’m all set to tell this guy to take a hike when Cass drapes an arm over my shoulders.

“Sorry, Love Machine, this one is all mine.”

The man looks as though he’s going to explode with happiness. “You can both take a ride on the love machine.”

“Thanks, but I’m only interested in love bugs,” Cass returns.

“Herbie,” I tell Love Machine, who looks utterly confused. “He’s the love bug.”

“You can call it Herbie if you want.”

“No, I really can’t,” Cass announces, unable to hold back her laughter.

“This guy bothering you, ladies?” Rob asks, walking over to us.

“We’ll be fine once Love Machine here takes a hike,” I say.

“Take a hike, Dave,” Rob says lightly. “Leave these pretty ladies alone.”

‘Dave’ grumbles something but thankfully moves, freeing up the seat for Cass.

I smile at Rob. “Thanks.”

“No problems, Lainey,” he says before moving along the bar to serve someone else.

“You okay?” Cass asks me quietly.

I look behind me to see Ben, Duncan, and Seb talking to the girls at the other table. Cass doesn’t look at all worried as she follows my gaze. She’s obviously secure enough in her relationship with Duncan that she doesn’t get upset when she sees him talking to other women. I’ve never felt that confident. I’ve never felt that secure in any of my relationships. Then again, I guess I’ve had every reason to feel insecure. Cass’s relationship with Duncan is the exact opposite of what all of mine have been. Duncan is crazy in love with her.

“Lainey?” she prompts.

I turn back to look at her. “I’m fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“If you want to talk...”

“Thanks, but I’m okay. Really.”

Or I will be when I can forget what happened a week ago, or at least put it behind me.

“Okay,” Cass says carefully, studying me to gage whether I’m telling the truth. “Good. If you’re sure you’re all right, I need to talk to you about something.”

Maybe it’s the way Cass is fidgeting and not quite meeting my eyes, or maybe it’s just her choice of words, but I feel a knot form in my stomach.

“Last week,” Cass starts, “I was at Duncan’s when Amber dropped by.”
