“But you’ll be done in ten,” I concluded, and enjoyed the way he playfully smiled.
“Yes,” he vowed. “Be good.”
“I’ll be a good statue of a Shadowborn with my protective Fae hybrid guard, who will ensure I remain still and not attract trouble by breathing,” I assured him and caught onto Kenzo’s smirk as he winked my way.
“I’ll keep my bestie Shadowling safe.”
“Good.” He let his hand run through my hair once as if to fix the bundle of blue strands from potentially getting tangled before he pulled away — even though it felt reluctant. “We’ll be back.”
We watched them walk out of the alleyway to where the guarded entrance was to the warded building, which left us standing there in a moment of silence.
“I miss them already,” I quietly confessed, which made Kenzo nod in agreement.
“Same. I’m kind of happy we don’t need to be separated when you two ascend to your new positions.”
“We’d die.” Now that I knew just how good Asher was in bed, I knew without a doubt we’d need to fuck every other day.
Heck. We’d fuck every day if we could.
It took me a second to realize Kenzo was in front of me, his hand suddenly on my forehead.
“What?”
“Just making sure you’re okay,” he confessed.
“Huh? Why?”
“The changes you made in the Shadow Realm took a lot of energy, didn’t they?” he inquired.
I was sure he probably knew how exactly I ignited those changes, but there was not an ounce of judgment in his eyes as he stared at me with great interest.
“It was a bit tiring,” I admitted. “I didn’t know what I’d done until Asher pointed it out, but I don’t feel super drained. Just tired and sore, but nothing that will make me fall ill,” I reassured him. “Thanks for worrying about me though.”
“Of course.” He moved to stand next to me as we stared down the alleyway as if Asher and Tobias would reappear at any moment.
“How’s Cinder doing?” I decided to ask. I hate that she wasn’t here with us. I really didn’t want her to feel as though we’d abandoned her or anything, but everything had been moving so fast, without a map of guidance as to what was next for us.
“Honestly, I’m not sure,” Kenzo confessed, looking just as troubled as I felt. “I don’t want her thinking we’ve abandoned her, but things have been rather…”
“Hectic,” I finished and sighed. “I’m going to ask Phyx if he can visit her and tell her and Theo that we’ve just been caught up in a lot so we haven’t gotten the chance to reunite with them yet. I’m sure they’ll understand it’s not intentional, but we’re just on autopilot at the moment.”
“Phyx isn’t with you?”
“No, actually,” I confessed and figured I’d share with him what Asher and I agreed upon earlier. “We decided we wanted Phyx, Juniper, and Axel to remain with Nyx and learn more about their origins as gods and goddesses. Phyrra is actually really knowledgeable and doesn’t seem to mind teaching. Nyx complimented her for teaching them the basics, but I think they really want to go into detail about everything, especially since the Grand Library is still off-limits.”
“But you’re not going numb without Juniper and Phyx?”
“Surprisingly, no,” I confessed. “I don’t know how to explain it exactly, but I feel…really empowered at the moment. I don’t want to say ‘normal’ because I don’t want to make it seem as if I felt weird with Juniper and Phyx within me, but their absence doesn’t make me feel numb or hollow. When they’re back as well, I again don’t feel much different aside from enjoying their company.”
“And if they’re outside of your body it no longer weakens you,” Kenzo acknowledged.
“Yes. We noticed that this morning. Nyx said we should observe how we feel through the day and if we do need them, all we have to do is summon them by calling back their energy and they’ll return.”
“Amazing.” Kenzo beamed. “Is Juniper a child or in adult form?”
“Nyx told me it depends on her energy levels. She kinda bounces between them but she’s getting better at entering her adult form which I’m sure she enjoys.”
“Axel’s probably on cloud nine right now,” Kenzo said with a smirk and I laughed.
