“You have to figure that part out, Lex,” he replied and looked away from me as he turned to face the cliff. His wings outstretched and I knew without a doubt he’d be flying away.

“Wait!” I reached out for his hand and grasped it before he could take off. He looked back at me before he gave me his full attention once more by turning to face me.

“What?”

“How were you able to just give your Ruler right away? It's not that simple. Surely Lily wasn’t involved since I’ve been sleeping this entire time, I think. Since this is a dream, right? You pulled me into this world to tell me everything since you’re looking for the crowns location, but what did you do to give it up? What did you bar… gain?”

I figured it out.

“You asked Lauren to get rid of your right as Ruler?”

“I didn’t necessarily ask,” he muttered and squeezed my hand. “It was a bargain. I requested something to be returned in exchange for giving up what was precious to me. Now do you understand why my persona is rather off? It's why I haven’t confronted my pack about it because one look and they’ll know I no longer rule. Attempting to find the crowns’ location will help you retrieve them. With the crown, you’ll be able to have control over those who may be harder to convince with simple words. Not all of the demon recruits are problematic, but the crown will make things a lot easier. I want us to find them before Travis tries to enter Demon Valley and take over. That’s why I’ve given off the impression Nathan has died from the blast on the other side—to give a distraction. At least one long enough for us to do what we need to do.”

“Then I have to wake up!” I stressed. “So we can look for it together and protect the valley before he tries to ambush us.”

“Yes,” I agreed. “Time runs faster here so I’m sure it's only been a few hours since we’ve left so… if we make haste, we can beat him. He also probably can’t fully access the valley without Laura.”

“I should have killed that cunt,” I snapped but smiled. “She can be good bait though.”

I’m sure he was wondering what I was already plotting, but I decided to get back to his bargain.

“Can you at least tell me what you asked in exchange for giving up your rulership?”

“Hmm,” he thought about it. “Only if you can do one thing?”

Of course he’d challenge me.

“What?”

“Kiss me,” he encouraged. “Just… one more time while I’m still the Ruler of Darkness in your eyes.”

Oh Malifer…

His words brought tears to my eyes as I let go of his hand and took a few steps back. I knew his mind was thinking otherwise—that I was pulling away from him—but I charged forward and took a strong enough leap to crash into his tall frame.

The impact made us lose balance, his arms wrapping around me by instinct while he was forced to use his wings to lift us off the ground to prevent us from falling.

It was the perfect distraction to grasp his shoulders and slam my lips against his, the two of us allowing this moment to be just ours.

To revolve around the connection we wholeheartedly shared.

My neck flared with heat, the obvious mark reminding me of our striking connection, and that’s what made me feel his overwhelming emotions that came crashing through me.

His disappointment in himself, the uncertainty of his future, the comparisons and heartache revolving around failing his pack that he felt destined to save, and the immense fear of losing me.

I could feel how his shame in not being able to save me and the others at the restaurant, and though Baker’s actions did leave a wound in his heart, it also felt like it did something else.

An opportunity?

He broke the kiss before I attempted to grasp more of that specific sensation, but before I could confront him about it, his arm moved specifically to get a stronghold on my waist so he could pry me from clinging to him without actually dropping me.

“Hey,” I huffed because I was actually out of breath, just like he was. “I wasn’t done.”

“If you keep going, I’m just going to get horny and you’re not here for me to fuck you,” he grumbled. “Can’t love me now, anyway.”

“Why not?” I demanded. “You have my mark.”

“I’m not the—”
