“The lab was created to kidnap shifter children and try the demon blood and whatever fuckery he was doing. Tampering and messing with them to test out the respawning abilities. Pushing the children to their limits, but they weren’t just ordinary children. Some were from well-off families with mafia ties. They were most likely kidnapped because its a common tactic to use against mafia families and empires.… But if my Father was in on this, what if other parents were too? That he offered them the chance to make their children immortal like purebloods.”

“Okay…” I was trying to follow. “But how would he prove that? Only vampires, aka purebloods, would be able to do such, and even if he was going to con families to offer their children for the experimentation, what proof would he have that it works? He wasn’t using you for the demonstrations or you would have remembered, right?”

“Right,” he agreed. “He didn’t use me to convince the others because I don’t have vampire blood. So he used the child who did.”

“Travis,” I concluded, and my head fucking hurt. “Are you suggesting you’re not brothers, but half brothers? Same Alpha wolf father, but different mothers, but no one else knew that, so he would use Travis to con other shifter families to believe their children would be immortal thanks to his experimentation but it was all a big ass scam so he could perfect this formula he was creating and using on these children.… But then the lab… the lab got destroyed…”

My eyes met his as I gawked at him.

“You found me at the destructive sight.… That lab… was the one run by your father. Your father plotted to you to be sacrificed, but instead of you surviving the drop as you had as a child… you died…”

“The rejection from the fake bond weakened my wolf side, which left me in a state no different from a human. I died but the experimental blood of the valley saved me because it felt like I was one of their own, and that’s where I met Lily and was bestowed the dark energy she’d been conserving for generations. I was given Wallas then as well.”

“Your father plotted that to happen… hoping that the curse from his ancestors would continue going but he’d be able to take advantage of the valley by using you. You wished to be a good Alpha, which meant you would potentially break the curse placed on your heritage, but he doesn’t want you to. He knew you and Nathan were the same individual even though you probably thought he didn’t, and he let you decide who would be sacrificed because you’d choose those you’d be willing to spend the effort to make stronger in comparison to other packs who don’t give a shit. Five years came and went and he expected to use me and try to make another heir…”

“Because he doesn’t trust Travis,” Malifer revealed. “Travis has all the power now because he controls the labs. Whatever caused the explosion could have taken the power away from Father, which is why when you were found, he focused on building his pack and neither of us remembered about the labs until recently.”

“That doesn’t explain why you don’t want to be the king of the valley. “Your father used you to gather the demons in the valley, but he has no control over them.”

“But Travis does.”

“He can’t! He can’t even access Demon Valley. You said anyone with ill intentions can’t enter the valley and he’s not a full demon hybrid or whatever. He’d have to be invited and you didn’t invite him so he can’t get access… unless…” I paused. “Laura.”

He smirked. “Laura,” he repeated.

“You’re saying because they fucked and he’s been feeding off of her that he can enter the valley if he wishes?”

“Yes,” he admitted. “But he needs the crown.”

“Then we make sure he doesn’t get the crown!”

“But he will get it,” Malifer stressed. “Through you.”

“Through me?” I gasped and glared at him. “Why the fuck would I give him the crown.”

“Because I can’t be king anymore.”

“Why the fuck not, Malifer?!” I shouted in frustration because I couldn’t fucking grasp where this merry-go-round of information and revelation was going.

“Because I gave it away.”

What?

I stared at him as the sadness in his eyes returned.

“You did what?”

“I gave it away.”

“The crown?”

“No. My right to be king,” he revealed. “I realized that I’m not fit to be the ruthless king… the demonic king needed to run this valley. I’m better off being a mafia boss than creating a world that not only favors my demon recruits but protects them from being used by the rest of the world when they arrive. I fucked up too many times, and it took Baker revealing everything to finally click in. If you hadn’t managed to con him into thinking you were still in your kidnappers' possession, we all would have perished and you would have been in Travis’s grasp. Then he would have come to Demon Valley, and you would have eventually found the crowns and be forced to give him control of this world. My naive viewpoints could have pushed us into a world of chaos and led to the end of the shifter race, if not the world. All because of me.”

He let go of me and let his wings outstretched as if he were ready for take-off.

“I’ve had nightmares of losing my valley since I created it, but the last three have all been the same. I’m facing you with a sword in my grasp, the edge of the blade pointing to your neck,” he elaborated as the mention of my neck made me reach out to lay my hand lightly on the flesh that wasn’t raw. “Behind you is Travis. He looks just like me. Only stronger. He has you wrapped in his spell. Your eyes are in a daze, but it's clear that you’re now his queen. All my comrades… anyone who swore loyalty to me is dead at my feet: Wallas, Felix, Fynn, Colton, and the fleet. They’re all gone and my last weapon of protection shatters. My father is behind me and ready to slice my throat, but I do the unexpected. I take the blade and decide to finish the deed they wished of me. I emphasize that I know I’ll never be a good ruler, but I know who will be.”

“Who?’ I dared to ask.
