“Things go well for that lady you pulled from the drink?” Johnny asked.

Cora felt a flicker of relief. “Yeah, thank God. She’s gonna make it.”

“Good...good job, Cobra.” Johnny hesitated. “I’ll wire you asap.”

“No rush. Well…somerush. Also, not to that old account.”

“What, why?”

“Gave my card to a prostitute.”

“Umm...”

“Not like that.”

“Ummm...”

“Shut up, Johnny.”

A brief moment of silence. She continued to navigate the best way to position her phone on the dash to keep an eye on the GPS. After a bit, she found some solace when she managed to lodge it above a vent.

“Well...shit, Cora. I guess I owe you,” said Johnny.

“That’s not how it works,” she said. “You did me a solid last time. Now I returned the favor. Makes us even. Except, you know, the ten grand.”

“Yeah, yeah. You’ll get your money, Cobra.”

Cora smirked, listening to more crooning from the country radio station. It hummed faintly in the background, giving a strangely satisfying backdrop to Johnny’s voice. She pictured her ex and wondered where he was right now.

On some new private contractor mission?

On some beach somewhere?

She frowned, scowling now. It wasn’t really any of her businesswhereJohnny was. This was strictly professional, wasn’t it?

“So,” Johnny said. “Where to now, Cobra?”

“Home,” she said.

“Oh, shit. You didn’t take enough punishment?”

She sighed. “I got a lead back there.”

“A lead on what?”

She thought of Gabriel and his claim that he knew something about her sister’s disappearance. But instead of answering Johnny, she said, “Hey...if you hear anything from an Agent Brady...Don’t take the call, okay?”

“Who’s that?”

She winced. “I—Someone who cares about me. But he was asking about you. Asking a lot of questions about how I got involved.”

“Sounds scary.”

“Yeah, well, I tossed him in the ocean. He’s still not speaking to me.”

Johnny snickered. “You have a habit of doing that to people, I think.”

She smiled, shook her head, and lowered down the window to her car. She leaned back, eyes closed, and allowed the breeze to assuage her features.
