He smiled and took her hand. “All of it. It’s the weekend, my tests are over, and you’re staying glued to my side until school starts on Monday.”

“No qualms here.”

She wanted to make up for lost time, and she intended to spend every minute with him, whether he wanted to see her or not.

Eric

After class, Eric headed to his guidance counselor’s office to receive his assignment. He’d talked to Holly about it already, and she was supportive, regardless of where he was placed.

Of course, she was.

On the way to the office, his mom called. He’d been avoiding her calls since leaving during Christmas break and not returning—with only a text summary of what had happened. Talking to her right before he saw the guidance counselor didn’t seem like a great idea, but he did have some time to kill.

“What’s up, Mom?”

“What’s up? Almost three months without a single word, and you ask me what’s up?”

He smiled and sat on a chair outside the office. “Mom, come on. I told you. I had to go get the girl.”

“And did you get her? Because when you were here, you said nothing about said girl, and then you drove a dozen hours to see her and bring her back to school. You couldn’t have stopped by and said goodbye on your way back to Logan?”

“I didn’t want to scare her. We’d just started dating, and you and Dad are a little intense.”

Mom huffed on the other line. “I am not intense. I’m desperate to see my son. Are you coming home for spring break? Should we take time off and go on vacation somewhere? Maybe a beach?”

He groaned. He’d never get Holly on a beach with strangers. “I don’t think Holly would like that. She’s got sc—”

“Wait, she’s coming? I didn’t invite her too.”

Fat luck, Momma! “Well, I guess I could stay around Logan, if you don’t want her to come with me.” There was no way he was leaving her for a whole week. That was too much time away, and as far as he knew, he only had a few more months to see her every day.

She sighed a long sigh. “Eric, you know you’re putting us in a tight position, right? Where is she going to stay? We don’t have any extra rooms. We’re redoing the main floor of our house.”

They hadn’t discussed it yet, but Eric was pretty sure Diane was going home with Cameron, and there was plenty of extra room for Holly. Road trip number two! He smiled at the thought of driving out together.

“Eric?”

“She’ll stay with her roommate at Cameron’s. He’s dating her roommate.”

Another sigh, this time more frustrated. “Fine, but we’d like to spend time with just you, especially since you left home early at Christmas and didn’t come back like you said.”

“Don’t be clingy, Mom. I promise I’ll be in your face as much as you want, but I’m not going to leave Holly at a stranger’s house. She’s my guest too.”

“Fine,” his mom said suddenly. “If this goes bad, though, it’ll be your fault.”

“Yes, Mommy,” he said with a smirk.

She gave one last exasperated sigh and hung up. He laughed and headed toward the guidance counselor’s office to receive his assignment. Now all he had to do was convince Holly to come with him and meet his parents. He smiled as he grabbed the door handle and pulled. He was always up for a challenge.

Eric headed back to his apartment, his heart heavy with fear. Wisconsin! Out of all the places he could’ve been assigned, he was sent across the US to the land of cheese. He bit back his worry as he saw Holly waiting for him on the steps of the building.

“Hey, sweetie,” he said. “Did you get done with class early?”

She nodded and hugged his side. “Yep. Test today.”

“Oh, that’s right. How did you do?”
