“Wow. So, you’re okay with all of this?” A gull cried right outside the window, its cawing a precursor to Lucy’s answer.

“Yes. It’s fine,” she smiled. “And thank you for trying to protect me this morning.” A rosiness that wasn’t there a second ago now painted her cheeks. “It was really sweet.” And then as an afterthought, she confided, “That lady was a dragon dressed as Hoda.”

A forceful laugh escaped me and it felt nice to joke about the situation. “They kind of all are; but they do what they have to for their ratings. Feelings have nothing to do with it, sadly.”

“I get it. It’s a business, just a cutthroat one.”

Remembering she had reason to speak to me as well, I asked what it was.

“The same thing,” she clarified. “And just to put this out there, if you’d rather keep a low profile…”

“No.” I cut her off before she could finish her thought. “I’ll be frank.”

“Okay, I’ll be Lucy.” She beamed at me across the coffee table, pleased with her cheesy joke.

“If you’re in, then I’m in. No need to sneak around?” I formed the latter as a question; I wanted her confirmation or refusal.

“I’m in.But,” she pondered, wiggling a little in her seat, “I think it would be a blast to fuck with E and Liam.”

Several scenarios came to mind, all of which were fun. “Deal.”

The conversation turned to lighter topics when I asked how her flight had been.

Lucy blew out a breath, causing her cheeks to puff in the process. “Well, the flight was fine, but we’ll just ignore the bathroom debacle after I got my luggage.”

“I should’ve been there,” I declared. “I’m excellent at knowing where restrooms are. I am one-for-one, you know.”

She cracked a smile. “That you are, however, this was an entirely different beast. Involving a tampon…” she trailed off.

Understanding dawned on me. Lucy didn’t seem shy about discussing such things, and to be honest, my mom never had been either, so menstruation was never a big deal to me.

“Well as long as you made it in time, that’s all that matters,” I observed objectively. “It’s not like you wielded it around, hitting people in your path.”

Her eyes cut to me sharply. “Yeah…because that’d be absurd,” she commented in a small voice.

“Wait. You didn’t.”

“Look, I didn’t mean to, alright? It just sort of happened…”

A belly-laugh escaped me. I know I shouldn’t have, but it was unstoppable. “I think I need the whole story.”

Lucy eyed me skeptically before launching into a retelling that was thoughtfully crafted like a comedy skit.

Once my laughter had subsided, I stood and she did too. “Anyone ever tell you that you have a natural talent for comedy?”

“Very funny.” Lucy went to slap my chest, but I caught her hand, holding it against me. The blue of her eyes reminded me of a glacier, clear and limitless.

“You are funny, Lucy. It’s what I like about you.” I could feel the heat from her petite hand burning a hole through my shirt.

“And you’re kind of charismatic, you know that, Mr. Superhero?” There was no humor to her tone, just a huskiness that had replaced her usual cheerfulness.

There was an unseen current between us. A buzzing that could only be felt like the seconds before lightning cracked across a night sky.

On tiptoes, Lucy touched her lips to mine. There was a fervency behind it. Desire, passion and lust all rolled together.

“Sorry. Wanted to do that since I saw you in the lobby,” she confessed boldly.

My hands rested on her lower back. Her lips glistened from our connection.
