Just then, Aunt Eliza comes out and I gravitate toward her. My mom and dad are out of town, and she is the closest thing I have to my mom right now. “Aunt E, I need some TLC. My ego hurts. My momma is gone.” I say it sounding like the wounded puppy that I am.

“Aww, come here, baby.” She embraces me in a hug. I am taller than her now, so I rest my chin on her head.

Later that night, after dinner at my aunt and uncle’s, I walk up the stairs as I pass Ezra's room. “What’s up, little E?”

She looks up under her lashes, waving me over. She is thirteen and a total spitfire. “Do you want to go cut Easton’s hair with me?” she whispers, and I smother a laugh.

“What did he do?” I whisper back.

She looks around as if there may be a hidden camera. “He ate the last cookie. My cookie. We must strike. Show no weakness. We’re not pussies, Nix.” She is definitely her dad through and through.

My eyes widen in shock as if the last cookie was sacrificed to the devil. “You’re right. Grab some glitter, scissors, and glue. I have a plan.”

And that’s how Easton ended up with a missing patch in his hair covered in glitter. And that’s why I’m Ezra's favorite.
