Page 4 of Break

I watch Monroe laugh while William spins her around on the dance floor. I hate William. I sit there, dateless, because I refused to accept the fact that she wasn’t going with me. I watch and simmer halfway through the night until I find my opportunity. William has moved on to Jennifer. Like the knight in golden armor I am, I sweep in, grabbing Monroe as she looks three seconds away from crying. “Don’t cry for that jerk, ma fille.”

She sighs, resting her arms around my shoulders as we dance. “How could he do that?” she whispers.

“Because he’s obviously stupid,” I growl, not liking that someone had hurt her. Her having boyfriends was going to be a dangerous game for them if they hurt her.

“I should have gone with you.” Her voice breaks.

“You totally should have,” I deadpan. She rests her head on my chest as I cup the back of her neck.

“Forgive me?” she asks, and I smile.

“Always.”

“I love you, Nix.”

I beam, spinning us in a circle. “I love you, Monroe.”

“Let’s never fight again,” she says, raising her eyes to meet mine.

I want to kiss her. But instead, I say, “Never again.”
