“What are you doing?” I asked, a little unnerved.

“I don’t know how to think,” she said, fake jerking around and spinning.

The good news was she wasn’t having some kind of seizure. The bad news was she didn’t answer the question.

“I can order us something.”

“I can cook,” MacKay said. “Let me see what Sera and Cash have in the house.”

I followed him into the kitchen, letting Marigold continue to spin in circles in the family room. “You don’t have to do this,” I told him. “I’ll figure something out.”

“I don’t mind. Cash and I were planning to go to dinner so it’s not like I have plans.”

“He looked really nervous,” I murmured, keeping an eye on Marigold so she didn’t overhear me. “It kind of has me freaked out. Sera said it didn’t feel like labor, but like a heart attack.”

He paused with his hand on the refrigerator handle. “Seriously? That bad?”

I bit my lip. “I’m not used to Cash looking rattled. He’s usually so calm.”

“This is his first time with labor and delivery though. Maybe it’s just first time jitters.”

“But this is Sera’s fourth time.” I moved from biting my lip to chewing my fingernails. My phone buzzed in my pocket. Automatically, I pulled it out to see even if it was Cash, even though that was ludicrous.

It was my father. I frowned and swiped to answer. My father didn’t usually do the calling. He let my mother do that and then she passed the phone to him after yelling his name about seventeen times until he finally came over and spoke to me.

“Hey, Daddy. I don’t know anything yet about the baby. Cash and Sera are on their way to the hospital now. Where’s Mama?”

“They’re having the baby?” There was a rustling. “Cash and Sera are going to the hospital,” he murmured to someone.

Now I was confused. “Wait, you didn’t talk to Cash? They might be having the baby, we’re not sure. Sera is having chest pains.”

My dad said a swear word I had never, ever heard him use.

“Daddy!” I was honestly shocked.

“I don’t need this kind of stress. Your brother Conway just got struck by lightning. That’s why I’m calling.”

“Hewhat?” I felt my heart drop into my stomach. “Is he okay? He’s okay, right? Please tell me he’s okay.” I choked on the last pleading words.

I couldn’t comprehend not having Conway in my life.

MacKay was watching me carefully. He reached out and took my hand into his and squeezed it.

“He’s okay. He’s alive, he’s regained consciousness.”

My vision went blurry with tears. “Thank God,” I breathed.

“He’s talking and to me, he sounded like he always does. He didn’t even seem confused or anything. But they’re running some neurological tests on him and keeping him in the hospital overnight.”

“As they should. Holy cow. How does something like that happen?” I was just in shock. Relieved, but still in shock.

“He was walking through the field. Hell if I know. I was going to say hop on a flight home tomorrow but now you’re telling me Sera’s in the hospital. I guess just keep me posted and we’ll talk soon.”

We ended the call and I turned to MacKay, feeling dizzy and overwhelmed.

“My brother Conway was struck by lightning.” Tears filled my eyes again.

“Holy shit.” MacKay looked as stunned as I felt. “He’s okay?”
