He snorted. “I’ve known her for exactly twelve hours. I met her at kegs and eggs this morning for the Vol game. I don’t owe her fantasy fulfillment.”

“Then apparently she doesn’t owe you fulfillment either because you look like you’re about to explode.” Whatever had happened out there, it hadn’t involved him busting a nut.

That clearly hit too close to home. He glared at me. “I’m going to go take a shower, and then let’s go get a drink.”

After the day I’d had, I was cool with that. But it’s a brotherly duty to annoy the shit out of your little brother. “Only if you ask nicely.”

“Fuck off. This is your fault.”

I couldn’t really deny that. I had interrupted his post-game party. “Aren’t you too old to go to kegs and eggs?”

“I will never be too old to mix beer and eggs together at eight in the morning. It’s my birthright.”

That made me laugh. “I’m a little jealous, to be honest. I’m not sold on baby showers.”

“I can’t believe you had to go to that.” Dylan gave a fake shudder. “Was it as bad as I imagine?”

I thought about Faith falling into that bush, legs falling apart. “It wasn’t horrible.”

“I don’t believe you. All those women getting high on pregnancy vibes, ovaries in overdrive. Mom always says pregnancy is contagious.”

“Mom was just using that as a scare tactic. She had four horny as hell sons.”

“Good looking sons too.” Dylan grinned. He clapped my arm. “Be ready in five.”

When I went into my room, I saw the senior marketing position open on the laptop. I picked up my phone and texted Faith.

Monday at nine.

I added the address of our office.

Can’t wait to come.

Damn it. I groaned. Did she know how that sounded?

I envisioned Faith’s sly smile.

Hell, yeah. She knew exactly how that sounded.

Faith

“Have you sobered up?” Cash asked as he swiped some cheese off of the kitchen island.

I made a face at him. “I was never drunk. I don’t even really drink. Mama, tell Cash I don’t drink.”

“I’ve never seen you really drink at home, but I don’t know what you did at college.”

“Seriously? That’s how you defend me, your youngest child?”

My mother fussed with arranging all the platters of leftover food from the baby shower around on the island. We were having a casual dinner of grazing on the leftovers. “Sorry, sweetheart. I thought you liked to defend yourself. But no, you didn’t seem drunk today.”

“I wasn’t drunk!” That was a pet peeve of mine— being accused of something I didn’t do. If I did it, and you asked me, I would admit it. I like to own my shit.

“Then why were you acting nuts around Mac?” Cash asked. “You shoved a cookie in his face.”

“I thought he might want a cookie,” I said, pausing to remember how damn hot he’d looked biting that cookie.

“Has it ever occurred to you that maybe Faith was just nervous?” Sera asked, fixing a plate for Marigold, who was trailing her around the island, pointing out what she wanted.
