Sliding my eyes to his, I sucked in a sharp breath. Our heads touched as we breathed each other’s air. “You sound like you think we should give him a chance.”

“I don’t. That’s not what this is… but Bryson said some things. Things that got me thinking. What do you know about Max, B? About his past? The skeletons in his closet?”

“Nothing, I don’t know anything. We aren’t exactly close, and he’s made his hatred for me pretty clear.”

Nix went still, his breathing turning ragged. “He say something to you?”

“It doesn’t matter.” I sighed. “I can handle Max, Nix.”

He tucked a stray hair behind my ear. “Want to sneak off to my car and make out?”

“Nix…” Heat crept up my neck and into my cheeks.

“Is it such a bad thing that I can’t keep my hands off you?” The intensity in his gaze seared me, burning me inside out.

“No, but we’re in public and I’m not…” I’m not used to this.

“So, no one here cares about us, B.”

“Zane looks like he cares.” My gaze flicked to where he watched us.

“Zane’s just pissed that I got into the ring with Max.”

“Something we can agree on.”

“We can’t control everything, B. Some things will always be outside of our reach.”

“I know, I… I just wish things weren’t so complicated.”

Nix curved his hand along the side of my neck and fitted his mouth to mine, shaping my lips with his. His kiss was like a match to a flame, igniting a fire inside me. Our tongues tangled in soft lazy licks as my fingers twisted into his hoodie.

“Nix,” I whispered, trying to catch my breath.

“Yeah, I know.” His pupils were blown with lust.

“Is it always like this?”

Intense. Consuming. Overwhelming.

“It’s never been like this.” He kissed me again, hard enough that it had to hurt his swollen lip. But if it did, it didn’t stop him.

Someone cleared their throat and I peeked up to find Zane watching us.

“What, Z?” Nix sighed.

“You think it’s wise being here?”

“It’s safe. Nobody from school comes here.”

“I’m not talking about us, asshole.” His hard gaze found me. “If someone sees the two of you…”

“We can go back to Chloe and Kye’s house, hang out in their—”

“We should probably go,” I said, unsure how I felt about going to the Carters’ house. Their mom would have questions. Questions I didn’t know how to answer.

“Go?” Nix frowned, that adorable pout of his making an appearance. “It’s still early.”

“It’s a school night,” Celeste said, joining us.
