Page 35 of These Dead Promises

“He seemed dead set on the meet, so I think we can trust him. With this at least.”

“Okay.” I blew out an exasperated breath. What the hell could this kid want with a guy like Bryson?

I guess we were going to find out.

“I’m outside the gym so I’ll let you get back to your studies.”

“Okay, don’t work out too hard.”

“Don’t you study too hard,” I teased. “I’ll text you later.”

“Okay.”

“Bye, B.”

“Bye, Nix.”

Neither of us hung up.

“Nix…”

“Yeah, I’m going. Talk later.” I forced myself to end the call, stuffing my cell in my pocket.

Taking a deep breath, I shouldered the door to the gym and slipped inside. The smell of blood, sweat, and testosterone hit me, but it gave me a strange kind of comfort. There was something about the sound of fists hitting bags, the grunts and groans of guys going at it that soothed something inside me.

What that said about me, I didn’t know. But it was hardly a surprise that a place like this settled me when I’d grown up with Joe Wilder’s temper. Because it was the one place I got to unleash myself.

Although I hadn’t been back since I’d got my ass handed to me by that asshole Sy. A couple of the guys dipped their chins in greeting. Zane and Kye were already working with the free weights, so I dumped my bag on the bench in the corner of the room and yanked off my sleeveless hoodie.

“You made it,” Zane said as I reached them.

“Yeah. But something weird happened.”

“We’re listening.”

“I spoke to B. Her brother Max wants an introduction with Bryson.”

“The fuck?”

“Exactly what I said.”

“Isn’t he like fifteen or something?” Kye asked and I corrected him.

“Sixteen.”

“What the fuck does he want with Bryson?”

“Fuck if I know, but Birdie said he was pretty insistent. He’s threatening to tell his old man about us if she doesn’t come through.”

“He can’t know for sure that you two are... whatever the fuck you two are doing.”

“Seemed confident enough to blackmail her.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Ask Bryson for an introduction, I guess.” I shrugged.

“Come on, Nix.” Zane scoffed. “He’ll never go for it.”
