Nix

“What the…?”I blinked up at an unfamiliar ceiling.

“Holy shit, what time is it?”

“Kye?” Sitting up, I rubbed my head. Fuck, it felt like I’d been whacked on the back of the skull with a tire iron.

Bodies littered the floor. Zane. Paul Odell. A few other guys from the team all crammed into Odell’s garage, sprawled over various pieces of threadbare furniture.

“Does anyone have the time?” Kye said.

A low groan came from beside me and Paul sat up. “It’s like nine twenty.”

“Fuck. What the hell was in those pills?” Zane barked, and I glanced over wondering if I looked as bad as he did.

Kye shrugged. “Whatever it was, it was some good shit.”

After I’d driven Harleigh home, I’d met Zane and Kye at Pat’s. They had already finished eating by the time I’d got there, so I’d gotten my order to go. We were going to head back to the party, but when Kye texted Paul to see if people were still around, he said a few of the guys had moved on to his place and invited us over.

It wasn’t usually my style to touch anything except the odd blunt or two. But when Paul had offered out the pills, attesting to their ‘awesome fucking trip’ I’d taken one, not caring what was in it. I wanted to get fucked up and forget about the dejected look on Harleigh’s face when she’d climbed out of my car.

Harleigh.

I patted my pocket and to my relief, found my cell phone. “Fuck,” I hissed when I realized it had a dead battery.

I needed to speak to her, to try to fix things after last night.

But what the fuck was I going to say?

“Hey, either of you got any charge?” I asked Zane and Kye. They both checked and shook their heads.

“I’m going to head out,” I said, clambering to my feet. Every bit of me ached and I wanted nothing more than a hot shower and some food to soak up whatever the fuck had been in those pills we’d dropped last night. But first, we had to drive back to The Row.

Paul lived in one of the small neighborhoods on the Darling Hill/Dartmouth border, but it was pretty much one straight road back home.

“You think you can drive?” Zane asked, joining me.

“Can you? You look like shit,” I said.

“You’re one to talk, asshole. Crazy night, huh?”

I looked around at the carnage. It wasn’t my finest moment, waking up with little to no memory of the night before, surrounded by half-dressed dudes and a bunch of empty bottles, beer cans, and ashtrays. But I’d needed to get out of my head. Before I did something really fucking stupid like drive over to Harleigh’s trailer and bury myself deep inside her.

“Come on, let’s get out of here.”

Kye skulked over to us. “My insides feel wrong. What the fuck was in that shit?”

“You guys leaving already?” Paul said. “Stay. I can get my mom to cook some—”

“Nah, man. I need a shower and my own bed.”

“Cool, bro. Cool. See you next time.”

When I would never touch his shit again. My brain felt like it had blended in a food processor.

The ride back to The Row was somber. Kye dozed on the back seat while Zane messed with my radio.

“Last night was some bad shit.”
