“What’s going on?” I say, wrapping an arm around Xander’s waist.

I’m met with silence.

“Okay, seriously?” Pulling away from Xander, I glare at all three of them. “Is Brooke in trouble? And why the fuck don’t you want to protect your sister?” I poke Xander in the chest.

“Because he wants to protect you.” Dominic steps forward with his hands shoved into his pockets. His eyes are dark, brooding. “Which he’d be able to do if he’d tell you the goddamn truth.”

“She’s already too involved as it is,” Xander says. “The less she knows, the better.”

“That’s not your call to make.” Dominic is standing in front of us, his glare directed over my head at the man holding me.

Squirming away from Xander, I say, “He’s right. It’s mine. Tell me what the fuck is going on.”

But Xander stays silent, and when I turn to Dominic, his lips are pressed together in a thin line. He won’t even look at me—it’s like he’s in some sort of staring contest with Xan.

Typical. The three of them have always shared an undying loyalty toward each other. Even now, when Dom so obviously thinks Xander is in the wrong, he’s keeping his mouth shut.

With a yell of frustration, I throw my hands up in the air. These men are ridiculous. “I’m going to bed. Text me when you hear from Blaze.”

Xander catches my arm before I’ve even taken two steps. He pulls me against his chest, capturing my lips in a kiss. “I’ll join you soon.”

I head deeper into the house, taking the stairs two-by-two.

Only once I’m in our bedroom do I glance at my phone. What I see makes my stomach drop.

Unknown Number: Go through Alexander’s things. I need to know what he has on me. You have until midnight.

Of course. How could I expect this to be easy? If Tristan has a person on the inside, there’s no way he’s going to pass up the opportunity to get some snooping done. Heading back the way I came, I stop in front of Xander’s office. Right now, he’s distracted by the guys. This might be my only chance to sneak around.

Reaching out, I turn the knob, but it barely moves. Locked.

I enter the next room—a massive library, complete with a balcony overlooking the pool area. And if I’m lucky...

Stepping outside, I peer to my left. Yes! There’s a door farther down that has to lead into the office, along with a window or two.

Of course, the door is locked. But one of the windows is slightly open, probably to let in a breeze. I pry out the screen and shove it up before climbing inside.

It’s dark, but I don’t dare turn a light on. Instead, I use the flashlight on my phone. The computer is password-protected, and most of the drawers of his desk are locked. But two aren’t.

Without hesitation, I open the first. There’s a stack of papers, but it all has to do with insurance. I find a small, black flash drive and stuff it into my pocket. I’ll plug it into my laptop later.

I pull open the second drawer and freeze. There, sitting on top of a notebook, is a gun. The metal glints in the moonlight.

A gun. Why would Xander need a gun? He has plenty of security. And who’d want to hurt him anyway?

Tristan.

“Don’t touch that.”

I yelp. Whirling around, I find a large figure standing in front of the window I entered from. My knees give out, even as I realize it’s Xander, and I grab onto the edge of the desk. “What—I—how—Xander, I can—” I stop. Explain? How?

He steps toward me, lifting me so I’m sitting on the desk. With one arm around me, he uses the other to softly close the drawer. When the gun disappears from sight, I let out a small breath of relief.

“I get an alert whenever an outside door or window opens. Nice thinking, taking the balcony to get in here. And thanks for reminding me I left the window open.”

I shiver. He forgot to close it? That means anyone could’ve climbed up to the balcony and gotten in. Tristan could’ve gotten in and found me. Tied me up again.

Xan would never let that happen.
