But for now, I have what I want. And I’m not going to waste a single second.

CHAPTER TEN

ALEXANDER

“YOU’RE A stupid fuck, you know that?” Dominic is standing over his desk, giving me his signature glare.

His office at Grayson Security is fairly sparse. Minus some artwork that, I must say, doesn’t suit him at all.

“She’ll be fine.” I lean back in one of the cushy chairs he has for his clients. Crossing my legs and resting my ankle on my knee, I say, “And she’s stronger than you think.”

“No thanks to you.”

Dominic is more agitated than normal. Something else is bothering him, other than the clusterfuck of my life. I file away that thought for later. Because right now, Dominic has a one track mind.

Unfortunately, all of his focus is on me.

“You couldn’t just wait a couple more months?” Dominic growls.

I avoid his gaze.

To be honest, it’d always been my intention to wait until we were in the clear. The last thing I want is to put her in any danger.

I thought I could satisfy myself by seeing Sophia every morning at the coffee shop. But instead of giving me any morsel of satisfaction, it made me want her more.

And when I saw that asshole Brent eyeing her up, I lost all self control.

“She wasn’t even a blip on Tristan’s radar before you barged back into her life.” Dominic is pacing now. “Now she has a huge fucking target on her back.”

“I’ll keep her safe.”

“How?” Dominic yells, whirling around and focusing that glare of his on me.

I almost yell back, but I stop myself. Because, goddammit, he’s right. I fucked up—big time.

Normally, someone else being protective of Sophia would piss me off. But Dom and Blaze were her friends in high school, too. We were all close, and the Graysons are like brothers to me.

They’re possibly the only other people on this godforsaken planet I’d trust Sophia’s safety with. Or Brooke’s, but I’m still holding out hope that we’ll come out of this without her getting any more involved than she already is.

“How, Alex?” Dominic steps forward, his hands balled into fists at his side. “How the fuck are you going to keep her safe?”

I plaster on a grin, placing my hands behind my head. “I happen to have the best security company on the east coast on retainer.”

Dominic’s left eye twitches, but he doesn’t tell me off. No, he won’t. Can’t. No matter how stoic he may try to appear, I know him too well. And he cares too much about Soph’s safety.

“I’ll arrange to have someone keep an eye on her.” He runs a hand through his hair. “Fuck, Alex.”

“I’m not going to let anything happen to her.”

“You can’t promise that. This guy is a monster.” Gesturing to the open files on his desk, Dominic shakes his head. “Ten confirmed kills. God knows how many more he’s hiding. Tristan isn’t afraid of doing his own dirty work, and he’s ruthless.”

“Which is why we’re going to take him down. Both of them. I promise, Dom.”

He plops down into his chair, and for a second, his facade of seriousness and control disappears. His exhaustion slips through, along with a sickening amount of worry.

For Soph, for humanity in general, and for whatever else is on his mind.

Recently, Tristan has taken charge of his family’s business, with his father’s strict supervision. They handle cybersecurity, but we’ve suspected for years that it’s just a front.
