“Then let’s get you some food.”

Inside, Xander orders coffee, and I order a sandwich with fries. My stomach growls at the delicious smells of food.

Thankfully, it doesn’t take long for my sandwich to come out, and I devour it.

When I’m halfway done, Xander clasps his hands together on top of the table. “You’re killing me, Soph.”

“I need a few answers before I tell you my decision.”

He narrows his eyes at me but stays silent.

“And Xander, I want—I need you to be perfectly honest with me. I need you to trust me enough to lay all your cards out on the table.”

“That’s pretty rich coming from you.”

“I’ll trust you when you give me a reason to trust you. As of now, I haven’t given you a reason not to trust me.”

“How about that fuckwad Brent?”

“I went out with him because you ghosted me.” I shoot him a glare.

His nostrils flare, and I can see him clenching his jaw. But he takes a deep breath. “Fine. What are your questions?”

“What’s going on between you and Vanessa?”

His eyes flash. “Nothing that concerns you.”

“That’s not good enough.”

He runs a hand through his dark hair. “We’re... using each other. The appearance of being close to me is good for her public image. It’s not too hard to pull off since my mother is still close with hers. And I’m keeping her somewhat close in case I need her to get close to someone else.”

My stomach flips, because that someone had me tied up in my bed last night. “Which is why she was so excited to see you Saturday night?”

Xander straightens, his eyes narrowing. “You saw that text.”

I nod, crossing my arms.

“Our families got together for dinner that night. She normally doesn’t send texts like that. My guess is she was hoping you’d see it to make you jealous.”

Drumming my fingers on the booth, I pause for a moment.

What he’s saying makes sense. It lines up with what Blaze said last night—that Xander has no interest in Vanessa, as far as he knows.

Just give him a little bit of trust.

“Fine. I believe you—for now.”

“What other questions do you have?” Xander still hasn’t relaxed. He’s moved from clasping his hands to gripping his coffee mug.

“Just one.” I squirm in my seat, crossing my legs and then uncrossing them. “I need to know what your intentions are, Xander. What exactly do you want from me, and what exactly do you feel for me?”

His face goes slack for a moment before he shakes his head. “You’re not ready to hear that.”

“You don’t get to decide what I’m ready for,” I snap, pushing my plate out of the way and leaning forward. “If you want this to work, then I need complete honesty from you.”

It’s true. I may have heard the truth about Xander’s feelings last night from Blaze, but it’s not the same. Blaze isn’t Xander, and he can’t get into his head. I need to hear the words come from Xander’s mouth.

“Fine. But I’m not doing this in here.” He stands, throwing some cash onto the table. “Come with me.”
