After a few minutes, I realize we’re not heading to the park. “Where are you taking me?”

“You’ll find out,” Xander says smoothly.

I’ve been hoping that this little outing of ours would go without a hitch. Just a conversation—questions, answers, and a mutual agreement.

But now?

Goddammit, I’m so tired of being treated like a child. Like an object.

“Alexander Hendricks, you don’t own me, so stop acting like you do. You can’t just take me random places without my consent.”

“Afraid I’m going to kidnap you?” He smirks.

“Xander.” My voice is full of a warning: you’re on thin fucking ice.

“We’ll be there in a few minutes. Just be patient.”

I let out a loud sigh, crossing my arms over my chest. Seriously?

When Alexander pulls into a gravel parking lot, it takes me a second to realize where we are. My hand rests over my heart as I take in the old diner standing in front of us.

A few weeks after we’d broken up, Xander had practically kidnapped me and taken me here. It was too far out of the way—and too rundown—for anyone in our social circles to run into us.

So he brought me here in secret, bought me dinner, and then kissed me out back until I was sure he was coming back to me.

I’d been wrong, of course.

“I have no desire to relive my memories here.” My voice is shaky, and I’m ready to punch something because of it. Anything.

“I’m asking you to make new ones.”

I shake my head. “No. You’re not breaking my heart here again, Alexander.”

“I have no intention of doing that, little bird.” His hand rests on my arm, softly squeezing. “Let me get the door for you.”

My skin feels cold the second his hand leaves my arm. I watch as he circles around the car. His black T-shirt is clinging to his muscles, and I hate how good he looks.

No, you don’t. You fucking love it.

When he opens the car door, he holds out a hand for me. I take it, and he pulls me up—and directly into him. With such tenderness it shocks me, he wraps an arm around me and caresses my cheek with the other. His eyes lock on mine. He’s looking at me in that way I can’t quite figure out. Longing? Lust? Passion? All three?

The urge to kiss him hits me, but I don’t. After my conversation with Blaze last night, I was practically ready to go all in. I was ready to really give Xander a chance.

But then Tristan had to ruin everything.

I don’t know what he has on Xander, if he has anything at all. But until I know more, I have to keep my guard up. I’m not falling for Xander just to lose him again.

I press a hand onto his chest to push away, but he catches my wrist.

“Just stay like this for a moment.” He leans his forehead down to rest on mine. “If this is the last time I get to hold you, I want it to last.”

A breath escapes me as he closes his eyes. This is the Xander I remember adoring. The one who didn’t hide his emotions from me.

“Xander...”

He hushes me, holding me closer for a second. Then he plants a lingering kiss on my forehead before releasing me. “Did you eat after work?”

I shake my head. “Had to stay late, didn’t have time.”
