Not after that text from Vanessa.

I open my mouth to tell him that. To end us. To tell him that I want him, but that I don’t think I can ever trust him.

But the words don’t come out.

A familiar feeling creeps into my gut—the feeling I’d had right after Alexander left me sobbing behind our high school.

I told him I loved him, and he told me we were over.

I can’t—I won’t—give him that kind of power over me again. He isn’t worth the risk of vulnerability.

So I step back, shaking my head. “I don’t know.”

“Then it’s time you figured it out, little bird.”

CHAPTER EIGHT

SOPHIA

XANDER COMPLETELY ghosts me.

I don’t hear from him at all on Sunday, and I don’t expect him to pick me up for work on Monday morning.

Still, the disappointment stings as I walk to work alone in the dark of the morning.

Tuesday is the same.

No showing up at the coffee shop. No calls. Not a single text.

A part of me is relieved. My life is back to normal. Just work, hanging out with Rachel and Victoria, my talks with Lissa, and plowing away at my client’s novel.

But I’m very obviously not okay, and Lissa has been shooting me concerned looks all week. Even Brent picks up on it the second he sees me Monday morning.

I’m supposed to figure out what I want. The problem is, I already know that. I just don’t know how to express it.

Or, to be perfectly honest, I don’t trust Alexander enough to put all my cards on the table.

Every night, my mind has been filled with Brooke’s and Vanessa’s words.

He doesn’t really date anymore. He only does flings. And he just goes from one girl to the next, using them up until he gets bored.

And then he ghosts them.

Just like he’s ghosting me.

But his words still haunt me. I’m not losing you again, Soph.

Did he mean it? Or did he know those were the magic words that would make me fall into his lap?

Alexander played with me and then dropped me the second I got too inconvenient.

Just like last time.

Just like Vanessa predicted.

And I only have myself to blame, for falling into a demon’s trap and playing his games.

Never again.
