Page 25 of Falling for Her

His lips twitch and my fingers tighten, the pupils of his eyes dilating as I put more and more pressure on his airway.

“She’ll always be mine,” he whispers through strangled breaths.

The machines begin to sound an alarm and so I let go, looking behind me to make sure a nurse doesn’t walk in. I hate that I can’t do what I want to do at this moment; get rid of him for good.

“Why?” I say through clenched teeth. “Why would you try and kill her if all you wanted was for her to come back to you?” I don’t understand his logic and when his choking laughter fills the room, I wonder if this man is actually psychotic.

“That girl was everything I wanted when I first met her. Naive, moldable, and very impressionable. I knew she could be perfect if it wasn’t for her friendship with you. She was in love with you. Anyone could see it, but it was holding her back.” He coughs, wincing as his fingers wrap around the wrist that still holds his throat. “I knew if I only got her away from you, she would submit to me.” That gleam in his eyes causes the bile to rise within my stomach. “And it worked. She was perfect in every way. For three years, she did everything I wanted… and I mean everything.”

He wags his eyebrows and I almost puke at the suggestion. The idea of this man having control over any woman, not just Hannah, is vile.

“But then something changed and she began to defy me. And I can’t have that. What would everyone think if I can’t even control my own girlfriend? So, I decided to put her in her place, and it worked… for a time.”

“Then she came home,” I mutter as he laughs, anger washing off him in waves as his eyes bore into mine.

“That whore stole my reputation when she left. It’s all anyone can fucking talk about, and I need it to stop.”

“So, you thought killing her would be the solution?” I hold my breath, hoping he plays right into my trap, and when that cocky smirk graces that beat-up face of his, I hope my instinct was right in coming in here.

“If she had just come home to me like I asked, took my threats to heart, I wouldn’t have had to drive her off the road. Killing her wasn’t my first choice, but at least if she’s dead, everyone will stop talking about her leaving me.”

My fingers tighten on his throat, my other hand wrapping around his bandaged wrist, causing him to cry out in pain.

“If I can’t have her, no one can.”

A relieved breath leaves me as I take my hands off him, standing tall and smirking.

Steven tilts his head to the side, watching as one of my hands dips into my jacket pocket and I pull out my phone.

“Thank you for that. I appreciate your confession,” I mutter before turning and heading toward the door.

“Wait, what the fuck?!” he screams, his eyes bulging.

This sense of euphoria washes over me, loving that I now have the upper hand, and I know that Hannah will never have to worry about this asshole ever again.

“You will never see Hannah again. I will make sure of that, and mark my words, I will make sure that you go away for a very long time, you piece of shit. You are the scum of the earth and I hope you find out what it feels like to be someone else’s bitch for a change.”

I don’t say anything else before walking out of his room and calling the cops.

It’s over.

It takes a few hours to get everything sorted, and by the time I hand over my cell phone to the cops, I’m exhausted and ready to see my girl. But of course, I have statements to record, more cops to talk to, and after what seemed like an eternity, they finally let me go back to the waiting area.

“What the hell did you do?” Max jokes, eyeing the line of cops as they walk down the hall toward the exit, leaving one behind to stay outside of Steven’s room.

They assured me when I was speaking with them that they would make sure he didn’t know where Hannah was or if she was even alive, but seeing a guard posted outside his room, with a gun holstered to his hip makes me a little more at ease.

“I just recorded a little something.”

Addison looks over at me with a smile.

“A little something that caused seven cops to show up and for them to take you away for three hours?”

Valid point.

“Okay, a big something,” I say with a smile. This weight finally lifted off my chest and I breathe deep for the first time in hours.

“Mr. Harris?”
