CHAPTER3

Quinn

He’s back.

Ever since that night I found out about the pub slowly going under, Wes has been in. He never says more than a few words, but the more I see him, the more comfort I get from his presence. I can't explain the warmth that washes over my body every time he walks through the door or when he sits in the same spot, directly in front of the bar. But I do know that I look forward to it. I long for his eyes on me, and I anticipate my racing heartbeat when he walks in and gives me that slight smirk that tips up the corner of his lips. I just wish I had the guts to step up to him, sit next to him, and say more than, “Hi, how are you?”

“Bitch, where is my drink!” Andy yells as the front door opens, and I burst out laughing. “It's been a hell of a day, and I need to drown myself in some good gin.”

I forcefully take my eyes off Wes, who chuckles to himself as Andy sits directly in front of me and plops her purse down on top of the bar. “That bad, huh?”

She shakes her head before leaning her forehead against the wooden bar in front of her. “You have no idea,” she mutters, groaning. “I thought marketing would be fun. I thought working for myself would be even better than being in an office, but all I get all day are people complaining that I'm not getting back to them fast enough…”

I continue to make her drink as my eyes dart from her to Wes, who is still silently watching us both.

“I wish I could email them all back and say, ‘Well, I’m sorry, Chad...I’m not a robot and can't come up with a new ad campaign for your fucking homemade software in under twelve hours.’”

After I set her drink on the bar, her head lifts, and her fingers grasp the glass. She lifts it to her mouth, taking a very long sip.

“Better?”

She shrugs and proceeds to drown the rest in one go.“Better,” she whispers as she motions for another, and I smile.

Doing my best not to peer over at Wes again, I turn around and organize some liquor bottles behind me.

“You know, you could always make the first move and go over there and talk to him about more than what he wants to drink.”

I stiffen, knowing she's right.“A guy like him wouldn't go for someone like me,” I state, watching her lift a brow in the mirrors between the shelves in front of me.

“A smoking hot, successful, and funny woman...yeah, I mean, men hate that,” Andy snorts.

I roll my eyes, turning back around and leaning against the counter, crossing my arms over my chest.“Is there a reason you're here besides giving me a hard time?”

“You love it when I'm here,” she grins.

I shake my head, a laugh bubbling in my chest even though I try to hide it as best as I can.

“But I did come in here for a reason.”

Now it's my turn to lift a brow. “Oh?”

“I have an idea on how to save this place.”

Interested, I take a step toward her, leaning against the bar and placing my head in the palm of my hands. “I’m listening.”

Her eyes light up, and I smile because this is why she loves marketing and advertising. Coming up with ideas and concepts to help companies like mine succeed is her addiction, even if she complains that it leads her to drink. She does love it.

“What about a singles night?” she offers.

I tilt my head to the side and take in the idea. It's not bad, and the more I play around with the idea in my head, the better it becomes.

“Valentine's Day is coming up, and I honestly think it's a great time for it. We could charge a cover and come up with some specialty drinks… what do you think?”

In the back of my head, I know that one night won't save my pub. I'm not that delusional, but it might help, and that's all I can ask for right now. “You might be on to something…” I trail off, my mind racing through countless ideas of how I can make this night happen in just over a month.

“What's this I hear about a singles night?” Wes asks. He sets down his empty beer bottle and sends a wink my way, which sets fire to every nerve in my body.

I try to say something sarcastic back, but my mouth opens, and nothing comes out. My eyes flick to Andy in a panic, so she does what she's always done best and plunks herself into a situation she has no business being in.
