Charlie

When Charlie walked into the wedding venue, he wondered if maybe Violet had chosen the wrong career path. The basic venue had been completely transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with shimmering lights and beautiful Christmas trees.

All Charlie could do was stare. It looked amazing.

His thoughts were interrupted by a red-faced Elijah stalking around the corner. Charlie froze, wondering if he was about to get yelled at for the damn bachelor party, but Elijah didn’t seem to notice him. He nearly ran for exit and slammed out of the door.

He found Violet staring at the door, looking pissed.

“Were you the reason Elijah stormed out of here?” Charlie asked.

“Nope.” Violet turned without another word to him.

“You’re lying.”

“Maybe, but I’m not doing this with you. I am not telling you about Elijah because you two are friends, and I am not about to get told how wrong I was. No way.”

“Hey, no need for insults. I’m not friends with Elijah.”

Violet paused, and slowly turned to him. “How do I know you’re not lying to me?”

“Come on, Moore. He’s an asshole. I cancelled a party because he can’t respect anyone’s opinions other than his own.”

“Well… I guess we found one thing to agree on.”

“I keep my mouth shut because Lewis likes him for some reason and wanted him in the wedding, but he sucks. Anything that makes him suffer is good in my books.”

“What if I told you I went off on him?”

That shouldn’t have been a problem. He’d love to hear about Elijah getting what he deserved, but for some reason, hearing it was Violet made him feel defensive, like she should have been fighting only with him.

“I would say he deserved it.” At least that wasn’t a lie.

This side of Violet, the angry, spiteful side of her, was always so intoxicating. But for some, inexplicable, ridiculous reason, he felt … jealous it wasn’t aimed at him. She was angry at someone else.

Violet gestured to one of the chairs sitting out in the venue and sat down. Charlie followed her, feeling an odd mix of curiosity and jealousy.

“For context, I slept with Elijah two years ago.”

“Excuse me?” He said it harshly. Hearing Violet had slept with Elijah of all people made him lose his battle with his anger for a moment.

“I don’t need your judgment.”

“Sorry,” Charlie said, getting a handle on his dark emotions. “Continue.”

“Lewis set it up. We went on a few dates, and he said he wanted a relationship. Then after we slept together, he made it very clear and very rudely he wasn’t. I remember what he said," Violet added. “It was along the lines of ‘I can’t believe you’d think I’d settle for you.’ “

“Him settling for you? I didn’t know he cracked jokes like that.”

Violet paused and smiled at him. “I’d almost consider that a compliment.”

“Maybe one in the distance. Go on.”

“So, today he blamed me for you cancelling the party.”

“How?”
