“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe it’s you trying to ruin your friend’s bachelor party. Maybe it’s Violet fucking Moore in my house because she has nowhere else to go, but the point is, Elijah, I don’t have time for this.”

“Wait, Violet Moore is at your house? Why?”

“It doesn’t matter. Party’s off. Bye, Elijah.”

“You can’t ruin my plans-“

Charlie hung up the phone, rolling his eyes. Elijah called him back, but Charlie ignored it. He instead sent Lewis a text.

Charlie: Sorry, something came up with me at work. I have to cancel the bachelor’s party.

Lewis didn’t take long to answer.

Lewis: That’s cool. Honestly, I wasn’t looking forward to it anyways. Too much to do.

Charlie nodded, feeling confident in his decision. Lewis didn’t seem to see Elijah for what he was, but Charlie always had. He didn’t want to make his friends life any worse before his wedding, so no bachelor party was the best option.

Elijah texted a few minutes later.

Elijah: Fuck you man. Don’t take your issues out with that bitch Violet on me.

Charlie rolled his eyes and blocked his number. He’d unblock it eventually. Maybe.

The guy was such a loose cannon and wasn’t worth his time. Besides, it wasn’t like Elijah could do anything about cancelling the bachelor’s party. It would be fine.

Violet

The day after the accident at her apartment was busy, but Violet got enough done to feel like a human again. She had her phone fixed, a load of laundry done, a claim on her things at her apartment in, and even told Dr. Jones about the accident and how she needed time to get her life together.

Violet heard Charlie get back from work around three, and she knew she needed to stay out of his way while he was home. She did her folding in his guest room and only went into the spooky basement to move over her laundry.

They didn’t see each other, but Violet still felt jumpy. Sure, he said he wouldn’t hold it against her, but he had gone back on his word before. And even if it weren’t him, she would hate being a burden on anyone. She had already felt bad going to Liv and Lewis.

When she decided to go back to work the next day, she had a few new dresses and more ordered. Most of what she needed to get done was done.

Her first day back was much easier than she anticipated. Everyone at work had heard, and they surprised her with a pile of gift cards to various fast-food joints. She almost cried because she knew she wasn’t touching Charlie’s kitchen with a ten-foot pole.

The teachers she worked with were amazing. They all made the same shit salary as she did, but they were some of the most giving people she knew. There were always going to be rude and mean teachers, but the vast majority were great people. It was part of the reason she stayed in the job. Plus, the kids.

And even the sixth graders seemed to take pity on her. Most of her students were well mannered that day. It was a welcome break from the chaos she was used to.

When the day was over, she finally checked her phone to see she had a missed call from Liv, which she immediately called back. She was sure Liv was checking in to see if Violet had been murdered.

“Hey,” Liv said. “You’re alive.”

“Mostly," Violet said. “It’s been weird. But I got my phone fixed.”

“I can tell. Plus, you don’t sound like you’ve recently murdered Charlie.”

“Oh no. I’d sound way happier," Violet said.

“How is it going?”

“Um…” Violet paused. “It’s been okay. He has a huge house.”

“I’ve never been. Lewis has seen it, but Charlie isn’t big on having guests over.”
