“Oh, she’s modest too. Charlie, what were you thinking fighting with her for all those years? She’s perfect!”

“I ask myself the same question every day,” Charlie replied.

For the whole conversation, his mom’s new girlfriend had been watching happily. She seemed excited but didn’t overstep to insert herself into the conversation.

“I’m Charlie," he said, holding out his hand. “It’s really nice to meet you.”

“I’m Brenda,” the woman said. “Your mom is right - this place looks amazing. I can see all the love in it.”

“Thank you, and I can see how much my mom cares about you too. Welcome to the family.”

Brenda’s eyes looked a little misty, but she smiled and stepped fully into the living room.

“Oh, honey, this is-“ His mom began.

“Brenda," Charlie said, smiling. “I introduced myself while you were crying to Violet.”

“I can’t help it. I’m a good person to cry to," Violet said.

“Are you Violet Moore?” Brenda asked, looking curious. “The new director of the summer outreach program for the school system?”

“Yeah, I am," Violet said, blushing. “Am I famous or something?”

“I wanted to talk to you about getting my grandson into your program.”

Violet’s eyes lit up. “Oh! I can help with that!”

While Violet talked to Brenda about her program, Charlie could only watch with a small smile on her face.

His mother elbowed him gently and said, “See? It’s worth it, isn’t it?”

“Yeah,” was all Charlie could reply.

The party went perfectly. Everyone got along and chatted. It was nice for Lewis and Charlie’s mom to catch up. He saw Liv and Micah chatting it away with Violet, and he really got to know his mom’s new girlfriend.

He never thought this would happen, but now that it had, he was glad he took the risk.

After the party was over, it was late in the evening. Violet had said goodbye to everyone on the porch, giving them all tight hugs and offering to do this again. Charlie leaned on his house, eyes fixated on her as she chatted.

Once people were gone, she turned and said, “That went well.”

“It did.”

“Did you ever think this would happen? A party at your house?”

“I never thought any of this would happen. Never in a million years.”

“Me either," Violet said. “But you know what? I’m glad the ceiling caved in at my old place. I think I needed it.”

Charlie reached for her and wrapped her in his arms tightly. “Yeah?”

“Yeah," she said, sounding content. “I mean it was terrifying and I hated it, but a lot of good came out of it.”

“You never would have stayed here otherwise.”

“You’re not getting rid of me now.”

Charlie stepped away from her, nervously. She looked at him with a curious smile. “What?”
